Just disgusted!

I walked by a car on my way into the grocery store at lunch today, and heard a small dog barking. I look over to see a small white chihuahua panting and barking with his nose as close to the opening in the barely cracked window as he can. There is no owner in sight, and no way they are doing their grocery shopping in 60 seconds or less. The worst part is that it is 100+ degrees today! What the hell is wrong with people???

PLEASE leave your dog at home when you go out!

Re: Just disgusted!

  • A friend of mine saw the same thing -- she called the cops and the cops were there in 5 minutes.

I'd have broken that windoiw and gotten that doggus out of there. People SUCK.
  • I did go into the store and told the customer service employee. She made an announcement on the overhead and when I went back out the car was gone. She also gave me the number for the local sheriff department and I will call that next time. It just makes me sad because people dont just do this with their dogs but their kids also...

  • you are preaching to the choir here.  I think a lot of people don't grasp how hot it gets in their car and quickly.  I have pondered creating little fliers to stick in their windshield with that info when I see a dog in a car.  Obviously doing what you did too.

Personally, if I saw a dog suffering in a car with any air on a super hot day I would have the debate of breaking the window. It's animal abuse and an owner 1) Should not be allowd to have the dog back and 2) Be charged for neglect.

I googled, out of curiosity, and apparently depending on the situation you can get away with it, but basically they tell you to call 911.

I'm afraid, with my strong feeling for protecting children and animals, that if I saw a dog suffering in a car like that my instinct would to break the window. Act first, think later for me. I've been known to flip out at people who abuse or neglect animals/children. Anyways, this is a dangerous topic for me because I get pretty heated just thinking about it. LoL...I shall stop here....

  • Yup, preaching to the choir. You do bring up a good topic in case someone browsing does not know how dangerous it is.

The car is like an oven. It does not matter if the windows are rolled up or down. The vehicle will become dangerously hot. It also does not need to be 100 degrees outside for it to become a death trap in the car. 80 degrees outside can be hot enough for heat stroke in a vehicle. Add in direct or partial sun it gets worse much quicker. Just because the weather is nice outside does not mean it will be nice inside the vehicle.

  • I agree, this post was a vent, but I also wanted to bring up the topic since it's now the hottest month of the year. If I had seen that car there when I went back out I would've called the sheriff immediately and waited by that car until that unworthy pet owner came back outside. I'm just hoping the reason they left was because they heard the overhead announcement, and hopefully they won't do it again...

  • How the hell can people not realize how fast a car gets hot??!!

They just don't care, "The dog gets upset if I leave her at home".

Ugh, they know how hot their car is when they get into it, they

also know how hot it gets when they turn the air off.

    I hate people. Sad

  • Well it's great to hear that you went in the store so it could be announced. Some people just don't care and imo those are the people with no souls!

    Here's a question.....

When I did the search to find out if it's legal/illegal to break a window in these cases a Canadian site came up for me first (I'm from Canada fyi). I'm assuming alot of you are from the US, so are your laws different? Would you be able to get away with it and no charges would be placed against you if you were to break the window?

  • I would call 911 and wait by the car.  If the persons showed up I'd confront them and write down the plate.  I know one of the regulars husband's had to break a window to get a dog once in the same situation but I think he was off duty law enforcement.  I also work in law enforcement and would break a window if I felt I needed to.

  • I work at a pet store, and at the vet inside the store they were handing out little flyer-lookin-things to hang in your car. It has a big black dot in the middle and when it gets too hot in the car, the black dot turns white and it says "extreme heat, get out immediately". everyone needs to have one of these!! people really dont realize how hot it gets. A cracked window doesn't help at all.
