Vitamin Regimen?

Is anyone on a vitamin regimen?  I was just recommended one to help me with energy/metabolism/general feel-goodery (like that word?).  I'd love to get some opinions/suggestions for ones that have worked for you, or reasons why not to start.

Re: Vitamin Regimen?

  • I take vitamin D and magnesium daily along with 4 other herbs daily for digestion and regular health.  I find that the herbs help with my digestion.  I take the vitamin D and magnesium because blood tests show I'm low in both and I have muscle pain issues.  I read that vitamin D and magnesium are supposed to help with it.  I'm not sure if it's doing anything but I still take it.

I used to take a lot more supplements but too much of a "good thing" is not good for you.  I've heard of people who felt better after they stopped taking so many vitamins and supplements.

You also want to avoid synthetic vitamins which are cheap and sold at most pharmacies but don't do much for your health.  Read about it in this long article:

  • Hello Guys'

you know,I use 'Eat Drink and Be Healthy', from Medical School, as my nutrition bible. Their advice echoes what's already been offered. Your best bet is to get a generic store version of the one a day multivitamin and mineral supplements that meets basic guidelines. The best thing is to get a capsule vitamin that you must take once in the morning and another some time during the day. An additional one before bed would be great. The reason for this? It is because in one one-a-day multivitamin, you have the complete package of all the nutrients. The issue, your body doesn't need all the nutrients at the same time, it needs it THROUGHOUT the day.

  • What are you deficient in? You do not need to start a vitamin regimen if you are eating a well balanced diet. Go to your Dr and get a blood workup to see if you are deficient in anything and then start taking vitamins based on your Drs recommendation.

My blood workup showed me in a good balance so the only vitamin I take is a prenatal. My DH is vitamin D deficient so he takes a small dosage of that.

  • Very low in iron, as many women tend to be.  I bruised very easily and was tired, and I'm taking calcium as I'm at risk for osteoporosis and don't get as much dairy as I intend to.  I also have a multi-day (sans iron) to fill in my other gaps.

One of my issues with a "regular diet" is that my work schedule is anything but regular, and often involves eating out at places where I'm not always guaranteed the nutritional values I need.
