You ladies always have such good advice I thought I would check here! We rescued a year old beagle mix about 3 months ago now. He is for the most part housebroken and was when we adopted him. From day 1 I walked him twice a day. Depending on my schedule, kids etc, sometimes the walks are longer and sometimes shorter. He never has pee accidents in the house. He will sit by the back door and bark if he needs to go out. But, for poop, he refuses to poop in our own yard. He is very very selective where he will go on walks and if he does not go on the morning or evening walk I know there will be an accident in the house at some point.
For example, this morning, we walked close to 3 miles. He seemed close to going several times, but never did. I was home all day and took him outside every 45 min to an hour to see if he would go in our yard, never did. Just came back inside from being out and he ran into the living room and went. I dont know how to break this? Some days its just not feasible to walk for an extended length of time. He has never peed in the house once! Any ideas for helping him get over the aversion to going in our own yard? Thanks!
Re: help for getting my pup to be totally housebroken
I would tether him to you or crate him when you can't watch him like a hawk so he can't sneak off and potty in the house. Also, make sure you are cleaning all accidents with an ezymatic cleaner like Nature's Miracle so he doesn't smell the poo and think it's ok to go there again.
Also, are you pairing a word/command with pottying? That has helped me immensely. At first, I just started saying the command ("Go pee" for us) while the dog was pottying to associate the word with the action. Over time, I was able to start giving the command, and my dogs will potty when I say it. Very helpful when you can't take them out for long, bad weather, etc. We use the same command for pee and poo, but you can use different commands for each if you like.
