Re: UO Thursday

  • I don't understand why people are against using the backpacks with "leashes" for little kids. I think it's a much better alternative than the mother that I experienced in target yesterday yelling at her kid across the store.
  • LOL, buttercup, if I have a child, it will definitely have a leash.

Alright, there is a lot of chatter on FB lately about the government forgiving all student loans.  Tongue Tied  I have a lot of problems with this. Most of my problems stem from the reasoning behind this being that "we have been lied to - we were told a degree would get us a better job yada yada and now I am in debt and can barely make my student loan payments."

    Huh.

I think it is best I hold my peace but really, REALLY?? I think we all know I am not exactly the brighest candle burning but even I know spending $100k to get a degree in nothing will amount to nothing or working at Starbucks. This is NOT the government's fault.  And if you borrow it, you should have to pay it back!!!!

I must have a very different Facebook feed because I never see this (in fact, I'm sure the last time I discussed/encountered discussion on this topic was with you). Bring me up to speed: is there active legislation on this topic? Is it getting a lot of traction with specific groups?

Who did this lying to kids, telling them that an art degree was going to lead to a high paying job? The government? I've never seen any such propaganda encouraging students to take out loans.

We have a backpack leash for M. She doesn't like to be in the stroller anymore and it allows her to walk independently and still being able to keep her from running from me. We mainly use it when we go to the zoos or other places where there are a lot of people. I know I get judged for it, but I really don't care.

I'm already done hearing about the election. I can never really get into them since there is so much mudslinging. I haven't been paying attention to any of the overage except reading a headline now and then. I also felt this same way 4 years ago.

I am not sure why all of a sudden it is making a comeback.  I thought it was over and done with and all of a sudden BAM here it is again.  I am going to have a seizure from rolling my eyes.  The other whine I see is "the government isn't upfront about student loans." Huh? It is a LOAN, you have to pay it BACK what other information does a person need?

  • So this is just a few individuals whining?

What part isn't clear?  The interest rates (which are damn low relative to other unsecured loans), the repayment period (also less harsh than other loans requiring immediate repayment with no options for deferrment/forebearance if times get tough), consolidation options, what?

Isn't there an education program / counseling requirement that you have to certify you understand all the materials from before you can ever sign a promissory note?

No clue. I got stung by a bee about a month ago and have been sick ever since.  I went to the doctor. Considering my allergies, asthma, etc, we all assumed it was carry over from the bee sting.

    Nope.

  • I work in higher ed, and school just started again. I really can't stand helicopter parents. It seems that over the past few years, the cords have stretched more and more with these kids.

I can't stand them either. Helicopter parents really don't understand what a disservice that is for their children, and I don't understand how they don't see that.

Agreed. This summer's enrollment wasn't as bad as last year's in terms of helicopter parents, but I've gotten some phone calls asking why I can't talk to them about their kid's schedule. One, FERPA [unless the kid signed a waiver]. Two, your kid is 18 - time to cut the cord.

I've learned a lot about what NOT to do when my boys get older during my time in higher ed, that's for sure.

  • I will gladly pay my loans back. I'm pissed I can't consolidate or refinance like other loans can. My interest rates are 6.8%, not that low.

And I'm also going to take the 10-year public service forgiveness when I'm eligible. Basically, if someone makes all their payments while working for a non-profit or eligible schools, the remaining balance is forgiven after ten years. I make less than the required starting teacher's salary in the state, so I'm fine with my loans being forgiven after ten years.

I have zero problem with programs that forgive after a period of service.  Why can't you consolidate? I (at least used to) get offers to consolidate alllllll the time.
  •  I was able to "consolidate" by transferring one loan to the company that has my other loan and got a .25% interest drop only on the loan I transferred, and the loans are still separate, just managed by the same company. The rules about interest rates and consolidation happened between when I was in undergrad and grad school, and there are different rules for both. It depends on when the loans were taken out whether the interest is variable or fixed and what it is. This link has some info on rates.

  • MiNe are  variable (aka crazy low right now). I didn't realize those had changed.

I was mostly objecting to the idea that you don't know the terms when you sign up. I think you at least have the ability to know the terms beforehand so it's probably not legitimate to say that's someone else's fault if you didn't.  (the royal you, not you Okla)
