Any Maine National Guard families?

My husband is in the National Guard and leaves this weekend for Basic and AIT in South Carolina for six months. I don't really have anybody to talk about it with, who understands what we're about to go through. Anybody else out there?

Re: Any Maine National Guard families?

  • There was a huge mass exodus of the Maine Nesties when the Nest was messing with the format, so there isn't really anyone around here any more. That being said, I don't think that anyone that was on here is with the National Guard. Sorry!

My DH does trips out of state and will be going for the first two weeks that I'll be at work since having our daughter. So I understand that aspect. It's tough and sucks so much!

  • My dad was active duty Air Force for 20 years and spent a few years in the Philippines when I was a kid.  We stayed "home" in Maine while he was gone, so his tour would be shorter. Was really hard on my mom (especially since she was sick) but he did get to come home a few times.

My brother was also active duty AF for 4 years  but that was before he was married.  I don't have knowledge of how it is as a wife, but it seemed ok as a kid.  We missed him of course but we had tons of family around to lean  on.

  • When I was in college, I dated a guy for a while that joined the National Guard and did his basic/AIT at Fort Jackson. I don't know what it's like to have to raise a child on your own during that time but I can relate a bit. I know that I lived for the letters and I think they were good for his moral too. Definitely get lots of envelopes/stamps/paper and be prepared to print off lots of pictures of your LO to send with the letters. I'm not great about checking the nest anymore but try to get on once a week. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll try to answer!
