Back to School Survey

It's that time of year again. Back to school time. Tax free weekends. Kids moaning and groaning about having to go back and parents celebrating a break from the summer holiday. Extra circulars, clubs, fund raisers and going to support the sports teams. Some places school has already started, some about to start and others still have until September. Let's do a fun back to school survey and get to know a little more about each other.

Re: Back to School Survey

  • Favorite Part About the Start of the School Year - When I was in school?  It was probably just getting back into a routine.  I honesly have no clue, because once I hit HS, I never really had a summer break.

Favorite Subject(s) in School - I loved Math.  AP Calculus was the death of me however, but I did like math.  I always excelled at math.

Favorite Grade - Um...maybe senior year??  All the grades ran together.  Sophmore year was a good year (Extra-curricular wise - ran at the semi-state for cross country!).

Most Memorable Teacher - I had a ton of fun teachers.  One of my algebra teachers (Mr. Pearson) was pretty funny and made the class enjoyable.  My Business Apps (Mr. Davis) teacher always liked me - his class was away too easy and I excelled at it. One of my spanish teachers (Mrs. Nichols) made the class fun.  I liked a lot of my math teachers.

Most Embarrassing Moment or Interesting Story About a School Experience

Least Favorite Part About Going Back to School - Homework!

Most Hated Subject(s) in School - History. Government.

    Least Favorite Grade - None?

Teacher You Disliked the Most - Mr. Chris Cavanaugh. He taught CHAP - which was a combined English and U.S. History.  It was taught by two teachers (1 for the english part and 1 for the U.S. History part).  It was a grade-weighted class (received more credit for GPA, which was the only reason I took it.  But I couldn't stand the U.S. History teacher!

Were You Involved in Any After School Activities or Clubs - yep - never was a huge leader in any of the organization, but I was involved (some more than others)

    • Middles School: Cross Country - 6th grade, Track and Field (distance) - 8th grade, National Junior Honor Society - 2nd semester 7th grade & all of 8th grade
    • High School:  Cross Country - all four years, Softball - 9th & 10th grade, Track and Field - 11th grade, Student Council - 10th, 11th & 12th grades I believe), Key Club - forget what years (wasn't that involved), Spanish Club - 9th and 10th grade, went to FCA
    • College - SABL (forget what it stood for - organization that puts on a scholarship weekend for students their senior year.  I went my senior year, so I was automatically a part of it.), Dawg Pound, Alpha Phi Omega (co-ed service fraternity)

Favorite Part About the Start of the School Year-

Shopping for al the back to school things. New outfits, shoes, supplies. If it involved shopping I was a ok. Seeing all my friends every day.

    Favorite Subject(s) in School-

Art (Drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, photoshop {yes I took a photoshop class in high school} and advanced art {basically a portfolio class}). I also really enjoyed most of my high school english classes and the reading classes in middle school. I love to read.

    Favorite Grade-

Every year of elementary except 4th grade was good. The best year was probably my Junior Year even though there was some crappy stuff that happened that year.

    Most Memorable Teacher -

My science teachers in general were a cooky bunch. My 8th grade science teacher loved pigs and the color pink. "Pink is a manly color". Then my 9th grade biology teacher loved to sing Riders on the Beam, her version, instead of Riders on the Storm. I adored my 9th grade English class. It was his first year teaching and he was great. I also had a really good class so that helped make things fun. He would hold his binder at chest level with one hand and gesture to it with the other while bobbing up and down on the balls of his feet.

Most Embarrassing Moment or Interesting Story About a School Experience- Hmmm...I am having a complete brain fart. I did loose a tooth that was not loose in kindergarten by biting into a cupcake. That was a surprise.

Least Favorite Part About Going Back to School -

Having to get up early and homework.

    Most Hated Subject(s) in School-

The writing/ essay classes in high school and english in elementary because they involve spelling.

    Least Favorite Grade -

4th. It was a bad school year. 6th was very awkward and horrible.

Teacher You Disliked the Most -

11th grade Writing teacher. She was hell on wheels. She would take role then ask where all the absent students were (I sat in the front 2 rows the entire year) and the class would respond E is here, she has been here the entire time. All my opinions on books were not the right opinion because it didn't mesh with her thoughts. She always gave me low marks on papers no matter what. No one liked her. She would go through the halls yelling out " Move!" or Get out of the way" or coming through!". She got the name hell on wheels because she was not very pleasant and would run you over with her wheel chair if you didn't move fast enough.

Were You Involved in Any After School Activities or Clubs -

I did dance and gymnastics through 2nd grade. Then I started doing ballet only. Middle school was ballet and the schools choir. High school was ballet until I broke my leg (then foot) and FFA.

Hm, seeing everyone that I wasn't able to see over the summer.

    Favorite Subject(s) in School
    Math.. I know, I'm weird.

    Favorite Grade
Probably 7th grade.  I went to a school that was K-8th, so everyone was really close.  In 6th grade we moved across the country for a year, then moved back so I was very happy to be back with my friends!

    Most Memorable Teacher
Mrs. Urban - see most embarrassing moment.

Most Embarrassing Moment or Interesting Story About a School Experience
When I was in 7th grade, I had a huge crush on an 8th grader.  He came in to deliver my teacher a note, so all the kids starting 'oh-ing & ah-ing'.  I was so embarrassed!  After he left the teacher got mad and asked why everyone was making a big deal that he was in there.  No one said anything - until she offered a handful of candy to the person who spoke up.  Sure enough, a boy yelled out "kylie likes patrick!"  The teacher felt so bad - and to make up for it I didn't have any homework for a month!! :)

Least Favorite Part About Going Back to School
New teachers who didn't know how to pronounce my name.  They always said Kyle instead of Kylie.

    Most Hated Subject(s) in School
    Social Studies, history, etc.

    Least Favorite Grade
Probably 6th grade when we moved.

    Teacher You Disliked the Most
Probably my honors biology teacher freshman year in high school.  I got placed in honors on accident, and my dad told me to stick it out.  It was brutal!

Were You Involved in Any After School Activities or Clubs
In middle school I was in volleyball, track, cheerleading, softball - it was a small school which meant easy to get into all sports.
In high school I was in guard.

  • Favorite Part About the Start of the School Year:  Meant that summer was over.  I never really liked summer because I was always at summer day camp.

    Favorite Subject(s) in School: History

Favorite Grade:  meh?  Didn't really have one.

Most Memorable Teacher: Mr. Dentino (band) and Mr. Mancini (history)

Most Embarrassing Moment or Interesting Story About a School Experience: didn't really have one

Least Favorite Part About Going Back to School: some of my classmates were those "I'm better than you" people

Most Hated Subject(s) in School: didn't really hate any subject in school.

Least Favorite Grade: 6th-8th; I hated middle school

Teacher You Disliked the Most: I didn't really like Mr. McAuley (1st semester junior year English - American Literature Survey), and I didn't like Mr. Kelly my freshman year, but he was okay my sophomore year (Spanish)

Were You Involved in Any After School Activities or Clubs: I did Pep Band, Pit Orchestra, Yearbook (editor-n-chief my senior year), and Model UN

  • Favorite Part About the Start of the School Year: Seeing everyone again.  I usually only saw the kids in my small neighborhood over the summer.  Also -- the smells in the air (that might be weird).  I loved the crisp mornings and warm afternoons.

    Favorite Subject(s) in School: English/Reading

Favorite Grade: 7th & 8th.  The work was "easy" and I had a great time with friends and "boyfriends."

Most Memorable Teacher: 10th grade history teacher.  I wasn't really a fan of history, but he did an amazing job and was so exciting.  I was so upset when he found out at the end of that year he was getting laid off.  I remember him openly being upset in class about having a pregnant wife and losing his job.  He deserved the job way more than the other history teacher they kept. ETA: I almost forgot my German teacher.  She was fabulous to anyone who was in German.  If you were not a student of hers, she was your worst nightmare.

Most Embarrassing Moment or Interesting Story About a School Experience: I thought I was cool in 6th grade and stole two of my mother's cigarettes.  I stashed them in my purse to show friends later.  During Library class, a girl went through my purse and found them.  She told the teacher.  I thought I was wise and handed them to a friend under the table so she could throw them away.

When I got to the principal's office, she dumped my purse out on her desk.  Out fell some tobacco and she asked me what it was.  I looked at her and said, "Pencil shavings?!"  Yeah... that didn't work.  They suspended me for a day or two but I had a plan to not get in trouble: they had left a message on my answering machine about the suspension.  When I got home, I was going to erase it and then play sick for the day or two.

That plan got foiled because my mom was coming to pick me up for a doctor's appointment the SAME day I got in trouble.  The principal saw my mother and called her into the office.  Yeah... I was busted.

Least Favorite Part About Going Back to School: I don't know.  I really liked school.  Maybe just having to wake up early again.

Most Hated Subject(s) in School: Geometry.  I did horribly.

Least Favorite Grade: Tough one.  I'd have to say 9th grade.  That was the Geometry year, LoL.

Teacher You Disliked the Most: 12th grade AP English teacher.  I really despised her and she despised me.  She thought she was holier than thou and was the best thing since sliced bread.

Were You Involved in Any After School Activities or Clubs: German Club, Environmental Club, and Choir.  I was involved in a few other clubs but they were clubs where you hardly did anything besides take a picture for the yearbook to say you were in the group.
