Is it normal to have to lock in for a year when selling?

I always thought it was 60 or 90 days.  A year?!   Do you think it would be rude to ask for only 3 or 6 months?

Re: Is it normal to have to lock in for a year when selling?

  • Do you mean the length of your contract with your realtor? Yeah, 1 year sounds extreme.  Ours was 6 months and then we extended 30 days.  I'd ask for whatever you are comfortable with.... 3 or 6 months.  If they don't want to change the terms then find someone else.

  • Yes the contract with the realtor is a year.  I thought that was a bit much.  I'd be comfortable with 6 months max.
  • No way would I do that.  Ours was 4 months.
  • 6 months is reasonable.  Anything less is a waste.  Please keep in mind the realtor is investing their time, energy, and money into marketing your property without seeing a cent until settlement.  Give them a real chance and do 6 months.  In my area, 1 year is not uncommon

  • Santorini- Are you a realtor?  I am totally willing to do 6 months.  A year just makes me nervous.  They keep saying that my house should be a quick sell so I think 6 months would be fair to both sides.  Thoughts?
  • I would be uncomfortable with one year. We did 6 months and hated our REA and couldn't wait to have the contract end. Then, we got a new REA and she let us do 3 months. Anything is negotiable.
  • We don't have a set amount of time.  If we're not satisfied, we need to tell her our issues, if we don't feel like it's improved after a week we can end our contract.
  • Typically you can set the terms- I would not recommend that long. We had a bad experience and were able to "fire" our realtor after 2 months. I would start with 60 or 90 days...

  • yes, that is in normal

  • I've heard of a year before, but if you're not comfortable with it, don't sign on! Ask for less time or find a different agent.
