Tell me about going to the salon..
Im going to be a cosmetologist, can you give me some input of your likes and dislikes? Im about to start interning soon and Im curious of some examples and experiences you have had that made you either keep coming back or run the hell away. I mostly have a lot of older older clients and thus it doesn't give me a great variation at the moment ya know being in school and such. So let me here 'em! Some basics. 1. Do you take notice to drinks, snacks and magazines if they are offered?2. If they give you a card do you keep it or use them to refer others? 3. If they spend extra time shampooing and giving a great massage do you like it or is it just more of a pain being in the shampoo bowl? Can I hear your input? Anything to help.
I'm hell on heels
Re: Tell me about going to the salon..
1. I usually have early appts, so I tend to grab coffee on the way. If I'm getting my hair colored and cut, I'll thumb through magazines for cut ideas because I never know what I want.
2. I usually keep the card so that if people ask who I go to, I can pull it out and give them the # to the salon.
3. I LOVE getting my hair shampooed and scalp massaged. It's always been my favorite part.
2. If they give you a card do you keep it or use them to refer others? Yes. I do BBO and people always comment on it. I always give them my stylist's info because she gives discounts for referrals. Plus she does an awesome job.
3. If they spend extra time shampooing and giving a great massage do you like it or is it just more of a pain being in the shampoo bowl?I had a hair stylist to a neck and shoulder massage at the chair once. I casually mentioned I was under a ton of stress and she just kind of did it ad hoc. It was lovely. I don't like chatty hair dressers. Some people do but I do not. I think you need to learn to read your customer and if they want to tell you their life story, go ahead and chat away but if someone is just politely answering your questions and not trying to engage in conversation, realize that and keep chatting to a minimum.I don't like pushy hair dressers either. Like in any other sales business, you'll learn to read which clients want to buy every single new product out there and the ones who don't. Once I went to a salon on a GC and the hair stylist practically begged me to be a regular. She didn't read any of my signals and I never went back to her even though she gave me a lovely haircut.
1) The place I go offers drinks (I get tea, but they have everything. I've seen men with beers) and when they bring it, they bring it on a tray with a couple of cookies and a warm towel. Which is lovely, except that I'm always on a diet or watching my weight, and I can't *not* eat cookies that are right in front of me.
Once I was there as they were finishing with a bridal party, for which they had provided fruit salad, croissants and mimosas. My stylist kept asking if I wanted any because they weren't going to eat it all. Eventually I caved and took the offer of some fruit. The fruit was nice, but I don't go to the hairdresser to eat. I do like the option of drinks though.
I always bring a book if I'm getting a long treatment, but on occasion I have read the books and mags they had. I love that they have funny books in addition to the usual People/Style/Whatever since I don't always want to read about the latest celeb drama.
2) I do keep the card, but I have only given it out once. It doesn't come up in conversation very often, and I don't feel like it's my job to bring in clients (not that I begrudge her any, she's awesome!)
3) The shampoo/head massage is absolutely the best part of the trip, and a major reason I am willing to pay what I do, even though I don't have much extra $$.
I have had bad head massages though - be careful not to press the head back against the sink. I've had a bruised neck from a trip to the salon before. Also, be sure to use the soft pads of your fingers and not the boney tips.
I think serious attitude is very important
I will accept their drink and magzine
It's nice when they offer drinks, soft drink, coffee and water is enough, I used to go to a salon who would serve wine.
Magazines: Please subscribe to a variety of magazines and throw anything more than 6-9 months old ones out. It's such a turn off to flip through promotional magazines or Us magazine from two years ago.
I love the extra time on the shampoo bowl.
It makes me very uncomfortable when a stylist trys to engage me in conversation. I know this makes me the minority but its true. A few questions here or there is fine, but when they keep digging it irritates me. I really want to unwind and enjoy the treatment.
I share the card if someone notices my hair or is asking for suggestions on who to see.
Extra attention/time is a bonus... I was once told by a stylist that he could do the job in a 1/3 of the time he took but he likes to make clients feel important - it works!
