Really Short Term Health Insurance?

My husband will start on my insurance on Sept. 1st but his ends this week and we just found out that there will be that gap. Any suggestions on companies that offer 1 - 2 week health insurance?

Re: Really Short Term Health Insurance?

  • Why is his insurance ending.  If it is due to job loss...you may want to look at COBRA (again, if it is due to job loss, he should have received a notice informing him about COBRA).  I may be wrong (that's likely to happen), but I believe with COBRA, if you opt not to pick up right away, you can do so retroactively if something should happen.  Otherwise, seems almost pointless to search for health insurance to cover for such a short period of time (unless he has health problems.  More info on COBRA:  http://www.dol.gov/ebsa/faqs/faq-consumer-cobra.html

  • If he has coverage now and is losing it due to job change/loss, and is eligible for COBRA, just wait it out.  You have either 60 or 90 days to elect COBRA and coverage is retroactive once you do...so if between now and 9/1 something happens, you get it and you're ok.  But if nothing happens in that time you've saved some $$.  A one week gap means nothing in terms of coverage/pre-existing conditions; for insurance purposes a "gap in coverage" is considered 64+ days.
  • Are you sure his insurance doesn't go until the end of the month?  I resigned on 1/16 and it was active until 1/31.  I think a lot of companies go by the end of the month.
