Make-up Brand recommendation...

I've used clinique quite a bit but have been using up other makeups I've gotten free/cheap from cvs/walgreens.  Don't to do the couponing as much anymore.  Would like to go somewhere to get my make-up done, match my skin, etc.  Do you have a fav brand you love?  Thanks.

Re: Make-up Brand recommendation...

  • Bobbi Brown, Laura Mercier and Trish McEvoy counters/artists do beautiful everyday looks.

For more drama, I like YSL and Nars. Dior and Chanel have nice colors, too and very good foundations but a bit pricier.

  • Mary Kay allows you to try before you buy. You can work with a local consultant plus there is a 100% money back guarantee just in case.  I would check out marykay.com and find a local consultant to help you out. Good luck.

  • Any of the make up counters at the department store will work with you and see what colors work for you best.   I like MAC, personally.

  • If you can, go to Sephora for a makeup consult, they carry pretty much every brand. I really like Too Faced, Josie Maran, and NARS.

Sephora's great, but many of the consultants actually represent the specific line. Many are employees of a specific company rather than Sephora (just like a dpartment store) and will shill those items rather than waht's best for you. This is the case at Ulta as well, though it doesn't seem to be to as great a degree.

    Brands I like-

Tarte. Too Faced, Smashbox. I also buy a fair amount of makeup at my local Company Stores Outlet which carries EL, Clinique, BB, MAC, Smashbox and a few others.

That's not necessarily true.   It depends on the Ulta.  Some of the larger stores are lucky to get more freelancers than smaller Ultas, but there is always someone who works for Ulta, rather than a freelancer for Bare Escentuals or Smashbox, on the floor.

I imagine the same is true for Sephora.  Yes, there are freelancers from the brand... but they have to have people on the floor who work for that company as well.

Hmmm, I don't know about that... Myself and a couple friends have gone a few times now for a consult to Sephora and no one's tried to represent only one company in any case. It really was all about what works for us & what we specifically like from a few brands... here at the Sephora's in Canada anyway, I don't know what they do in the US...

  • I am a big fan of benefit. I just love the packaging and their products tend to last a long time. I love Bobbi Brown for eye shadow and of coarse Mac.

I tend to use Guerlain for my foundation nothing beats it in my opion and I just love that dewy look.

  • I can't say I've ever been overly impressed with the ladies at either Sephora or Ulta, I don't feel like they have a lot of training and steer you to what is "popular" rather than what's right for you - I've had better luck with my local Nordstroms.

    Eyeshadows - Nars & MAC

    Eyeliner - MAC

    Lipstick/Gloss - MAC

Bronzer - Nars or Kevyn Aucoin (just picked this one up and like it so far)

    Highlighter - Nars Mutiple (awesome)

    Blush - Nars

Mascara - Giorgio Armani - kicks Diorshows butt!

Primer - Smashbox - still on the fence with this one
