Maybe dumbest cooking question ever- but I've gotta ask!

Ok.. you read the title: seriously- maybe the lamest question ever... but-

When you make something in the crock pot/slow cooker and it calls for you to put chicken breast in raw (and it will cook over the 4-8 hour cook time) do you really put it in raw? Haha I told you it was dumb.. I understand what it calls for. I'm just always so scared that it wouldn't cook all the way through, I wouldn't be able to tell it wasn't cooked through (due to sauces or some other ridiculous excuse I have), and then everyone I'm serving is simultaneously barfing all over my house. Right? Haha surely not- but it's a real fear of mine!

I swear, I cook a lot, and I'm good at it! I'd just always cook the chicken, then put it in the crock pot so I'm not worrying about it all day/night. Should I really just put it in raw and stop being such a baby?

OK.... off to hide from imminent flames... Embarrassed

  • Yes, put in raw. It's a slow cooker, cook being the important word.

Ok thanks. :) Guess I just needed that extra nudge to trust the slow cooker and throw the chicken in raw! Looking forward to NOT baking it before next time! Thank you! Embarrassed

  • If you want to be on the safe side, get a meat thermometer and check the temperature when it's done.

  • Haha thanks ladies! For not flaming me, and for the advice! I'll throw it in raw- and if I'm still scared, I'll check the temp. Thanks again- I'll stop being such a baby!

  • Not only do you throw it in raw, but you can also put frozen chicken breasts directly into the crockpot. I love that I can do that because I often forget to defrost it!
  • I put it in frozen which allows me to cook it a bit longer.  No difference in taste/texture IMO.  You must think I'm an abomination!

I do this too. It's one of the reasons I love my crockpot.. I don't even need to defrost the chicken!

I've been using my crockpot for about 4 years and have never once had the chicken not cook all the way. In fact sometimes I will check on it and have to take it out earlier than the stated time.

If you're worried (and I think we all are!), I always cut one of the pieces of chicken in half before I take it out, just to check. I do this even when I bake it in the oven. Yea, one of us gets a piece of chicken already cut in half, but it's better than serving it without knowing that it is completely cooked!
