Fleas!

I just found fleas on my 9 month old Rottweiler this morning.

I feel so itchy & gross!

I went to Petco and immediately applied Frontline. I also bought flea shampoo but have to wait a couple of days before I can shampoo her. I washed our sheets/blankets/pillowcases (although she doesn't sleep in our bed, her crate is in our bedroom) on the hottest possible setting. I also threw her bed out and vacuummed the couch and mattress. I washed the floors. Luckily, we have no rugs.

Does anyone have any tips on getting rid of them?

 Thanks!

Re: Fleas!

  • Yikes! That's a bummer. I would say give her vet a call and see if they have a recommendation on household sprays you can you on your house. Make sure to keep up with the vacuuming and washing of bedding. As for the flea shampoo, I wouldn't use it because she already has a dose of frontline applied. This could be too toxic for a puppy.

     Good luck!

  • Flontline does not really work. Use Dawn to wash your dog. It kills the fleas immediately and is much better than flea shampoo. Also, Comfortis, the flea is the best thing to keep fleas off your pet. I have literally tried everything with my cocker spaniel and those are the two things that work the best.
  • We have the best luck with frontline in our household (after trying both advantix and comfortis).

Also make sure you wait several days before washing your pup to let the frontline become fully effective. Call your vet. Unless you have a real infestation, fleas really aren't a big deal in most situations and can be easily dealt with.

They say you really should treat your yard too, if possible. Our yard is 3 acres, so we never treat it. I'll notice a flea on the dogs once in a while, but they never seem itchy or anything. We bath frequently, vacuum several times weekly, and apply topical prevention as the directions state.

Frontline works quite well in many areas of this country.  Some areas do struggle with resistance to Frontline but not all.

  • The thing about Frontline is it does not repel fleas, and can take a few doses to eliminate them from your environment. I find Advantix works better as it does repel and kill. Just not a great idea to use if you have cats.

The only real successful way I've seen to eliminate fleas is to give a dose of Capstar (orally administered tablet that will have fleas jumping off the dog in less than an hour, and will kill any flea on dog, safe to use on puppies/kittens at least a month old), bomb your house, vacuum/clean like crazy and apply frontline/advantix the next day. Chickens in the yard also help!
