Disney - World, Land or Cruise? Help please

We want to do a family getaway during the holidays, leaving the day after Christmas or later (so the boys can do Santa) and then coming back before the 4th or so when they go back to daycare. So we have a few days to work with. A cruise during that time would be about $5,000 and that isn't quite what we want to spend. We wanted something cheaper but during those times, is that possible? And what is better for our kiddos - age 4 1/2 at that time and about 10 1/2 months? We have never been on a cruise before nor have we flown with the kiddos.

If either World or Land which one and why?  And what parks would you suggest?  Our 4 year old loves Toy Story and Madasgar, etc.  He likes Transformers Rescue Bots as well (there are other shows that are mean) - not sure if they have something like that.  H went like 20 years ago but I have never been.  We could go out of the Galveston port if we pick the cruise and drive there which saves us from paying airfare.  If we pick Land or World I don't think we would want to drive.  If we pick flying which airlines is more child friendly?

I'm overwhelmed and don't even know where to start!  Thanks.

  • Disney is expensive any time you go (lodging, food, tickets, car rental). It is more expensive during the Holidays. Plus, if you are not keen on flying with them (also added expense) driving to the port of Galveston to go on the cruise would be best.

I have not been on a Disney Cruise but it I am sure it is worth every penny. From the DVDs they send you in the mail they look like they have a phenomenal children's program.

  • do the land/sea option! dh and i did that a few years ago and it was great! a few days at the park and then onto the ship. disney's never cheap-over the holidays it's more. we dont have kids (or want them) and we had an awesome time on the cruise and park.

as for kid friendly airlines-no idea. as far as i know they're all about the same. the only glaring difference is if you can reserve seats together and or not pay for checked luggage. southwest, for example, has no assigned seats. jetblue does and you dont pay for 1st checked suitcase per person.

Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:
Alison's book recommendations, favorite quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • I agree with PP who said you could do a land/sea package and with everyone who said Disney is never particularly cheap.  Transformers are not Disney, but I think they have some Transformers stuff at Universal, so that might sway your decision if you are looking to do a non-Disney day.

Have you gotten any of the free DVDs that Disney sends in the mail? If not go to their website and request to get them. They may help you make that decision on what to do. There are also forums that are all about Disney. I haven't tried finding them but it would be worth a try searching for. The Unofficial Guide book series would be good to browse through.

I didn't think of Universal parks. If you go to Florida you could spend a day or two at Universal Studios. It is just down the road from Disney World. They are comic book super hero, Harry Potter, Madagascar (not sure if they have Madagascar at the Florida location).

I still think going on the Disney cruise from Galveston may be the easier option with little ones. Thats just my opinion.

  • Thanks for the help - I think a cruise would be best and we will probably look into doing that.  It's more expensive but I REALLY don't want to fly with them right now, I would rather wait until they are older and we can do something.  I don't think I want to spend all my time at the parks waiting in lines, etc. so I think we might look into going over the holidays on the cruise.  Or maybe save up and go next year now that we know how much it is.  We were told they weren't going to stay at the Galveston Port in 2013 but I think they are - if they weren't that would change things as well.  I appreciate your help - I think they are too young for me to feel comfortable with the crowds, etc. at the park at this time.  Thanks!!!

  • If those have to be your travel dates, I'd 100% advocate for the cruise. The week of Christmas is the busiest in the parks on both coasts. Busy to the point of park closures and hours of wait time. Disney is my favorite place to vacation and I had a really hard time enjoying myself that week - I don't even want to think about how little ones would deal with it.

If you do a cruise it will be much less overwhelming and I'm sure you'll have a great time. If not Disney, consider Royal Caribbean if you want to save a little.
