Synopsis: The dog's owner & his friend climb a 13kft mountain with man's dog. They get to the top and the dog's paws are so torn up it can't walk back down. The two people try to carry the dog down but they can't (dog weighs about 100lbs). So they leave the dog. When they get to the bottom they call 911 but they don't do search and rescues for dogs. The owner assumes the dog is dead and just gives up.

SIX days later two strangers find the dog, try to carry her down and can't. They more or less organize a team via a hiker's group online to go back and rescue the dog. The original owner sees the dog has been rescued online, and asks where she is so he can go get her. He is now being charged with animal cruelty.

Now, I'm not a hiker, but I am a dog owner and I can't fathom leaving my dog and not going back for him. Our dog is a member of our family and I couldn't leave family behind. This makes me so sick and so angry!

  • I heard about this the other day and just couldn't believe someone would leave their dog like that.  I hope the people who found her get to keep her.

  • This is so sad, but I'm glad to hear the dog is safe.

I don't understand at all how someone could just leave and give up on their dog. For me, it would never be an option and would never even cross my mind... you figure something out!

    Anniversary
  • I saw this the other day and couldn't believe this d bag wanted the dog back! He left her there to die! He didn't try to bring her back. You best believe I would find a way to bring that dog back down the mountain. He doesn't deserve to have her or any other dog. Period.
  • No way would we ever leave our pups anywhere...my H would take as long as it takes to get him down if these every happened, meanwhile my dog is 15lbs so big difference but still. One time when walking on a trail with him he got a rock stuck in his paw and started crying...me and my mom took turns carrying him back.

  • We use this doggy daycare service that also does doggy hikes. Well the woman who runs it, and hikes 5 days a week, said she once had to carry a 40lb dog 3 miles with her boyfriend. She said it was terrible, they almost couldn't do it. So I can imagine it would be impossible with a 100lb dog without the proper tools, etc.

That being said, I told H this morning that if this ever happened to us I would send him off and stay with Boomer. That way they would HAVE to come back for me and H would be the better hiker anyways. I just don't think I could leave my dog alone in the wilderness. H yes, dog no.

  • ?!?!??!??!?!??!?!??!?!??!?!??!?!??!?!??!?!??!?!??!?!??!?!??!?!??!?!

I DON'T understand people.  H and I would have done the same as you bb - one of us would have stayed with the dog and one of us would have gone for help.  Our dogs are our children and I cannot phathom leaving them behind.

We had a very similar thing happen here, where someone literally shot a lab and then left it to die.  This poor dog had been shot and then left in the woods and by some miracle a family came upon her and immediately took her to the local vet.  There was an article in the paper this week that she was adopted by a very loving women and is going to provide everything for this lovely dog.  I know the "man hunt" is on for however shot her....

  • i'm still wondering why the heck you would take your dog to climb a 13000 foot mountain anyway. i mean, it's not like you're going for a walk in the park.
