Facial Hair Removal Advice, Please

I am giving myself a mini makeover and want to get rid of the hair on my upper lip (and maybe chin). I worry about irritating my skin, how often I'll need to touch up, the hair growing back thick and/or prickly, and cost.

Any advice on a product or process (like waxing)? Could you tell me your experiences?

TIA!

Re: Facial Hair Removal Advice, Please

  • I usually use the sally hansen hair removal for face but it can be irritating. I much prefer waxing and do that, but find I have to do it more often for some reason (which is weird).

Mine is very fine, I have never found that the cream nor waxing has made it stiff at all. I think shaving or plucking it would do that though.

If you can afford it, I'd get electrolysis. I think that is a great option if you have the pain tolerance and money for it (it's not really that expensive, mine cost $30 per session, which was usually 15-25 minutes but you do have to go once or twice a week for a while).

  • I waxed for years... and had good results from that.  If you wax, the hair won't grow back thicker.  I had tried removal creams and had a bad experience once, and now I only wax.

There are some cons that COULD happen with waxing.  It's unlikely.  But if the wax is too hot, you CAN have some blistering.  I never had that happen.  And going some place where they use "blue" wax or hard wax, you will avoid most of the blistering.  Those waxes don't get as hot. The place I get my eyebrows waxed at uses hard wax, and it's much nicer.  You'll pay a bit more for a brow wax, but it's worth it IMHO.

The past few years I've done laser hair removal.  It's costly, but the hair is significantly less, and in some of my areas completely gone.  I do still have a little bit of upper lip hair (after 2 years of treatment) but it's barely noticeable now, unless you're staring at my face with a magnifying glass.

Waxing is a decision that needs to be thought through. Once you start you have to keep going. It's fine for most areas but I think you face is a little different. You will get stubble on you face. Would you consider bleaching instead? Or laser hair removal?

  • I wax my upper lip. I found the Sally Hensen at home waxing kit with its own wax heater/melter. It is about $20.

I have to wax every month and a half or so. My hair is light colored and although I have waxed it a lot, it has never darkened. But, everyone's biology is different so anything is possible.

Pros: My own schedule. I can be picky with it (when you pay to have it done, it's pretty quick and sometimes they miss hairs). Cheaper. The kit is $20, but I can get many, many uses out of it. I have not had any trouble with the heat being too high.

Cons: A bit messy, but this is the price to pay for saving money. If you are slow and take your time, it isn't a terrible cleanup. And, if you have any residual wax stuck on, some baby or other oil will remove it.

  • I did electrolysis and it's so nice to not have to worry about it now.  For a small area it clears fast, but you will need multiple sessions.

  • Thanks everyone. Maybe I'll give home waxing a try.

  • You can also try threading.

I am lasering my chin, I am 3 sessions into my 6 session package and see a significant results already.  Totally worth the price.

  • I'm allergic to wax (which I found out after getting a bikini wax.  It's about as awesome as it sounds), so I swear by threading for my upper lip.  I go every 6 - 8 weeks or so and although it's not necessarily touted as a side effect, I have noticed the hair either growing back a bit finer or not at all.  But it's quick, it's easy, and it's cheap.  Totally worth it.
  • Laser hair removal technique is the best option for hair removal if you want the perfect result. i have used techniques like waxing and tweezing, but now lastly i took laser for hair removal and advice everyone for it, it gives better result then these old techniques, good thing about it is, its far more painless, comfortable and its result are very long-lasting.
