So I already have an appointment scheduled for next Thursday with my dermatologist, but I wanted to get some opinions. I am unable to add a picture, so I will describe it to the best of my ability.
My mom, sister and I have the same mole about an inch above our right ear. It's basically a skin pigmentation and not raised at all. I could never feel it, and the only reason I know I have it is because my mom found it a while ago while braiding my hair. It's a brown ring with skin color in the center. I had my dermatologist look at it, just in case, when I was in about two years ago getting a mole removed on my thigh that was bothersome (I kept cutting it with my razor). He said it looked fine (since it was flat and perfectly round), and the mole on my leg was fine also (he biopsied it).
Last night I ran my hand through my hair and felt a bump, which I realized quickly was in the same spot as where my mole was. So I went over to the mirror, then got DH to look at it. It is raised in the center now (the brown ring part is still flat) and is red and looks inflamed. It is slightly tender and is pretty hard.
Has anyone had something like this happen and what was it? TIA.
Re: Mole Change - Benign?
Good idea making an appointment--better safe than sorry.
I am a melanoma survivor, so I get poked, scanned, examined, biopsied, whatever, A LOT. I've had 12 biopsies, and 3 of them were on moles that had changed in shape, appearance and color. 2 were nothing. One was melanoma. I am not in any way saying that "zomg, you probably have cancer", but change is definitely the best reason to have something checked. The ones I had that changed more in shape and color than anything, and the one that turned out to be melanoma was multi-colored (red, brown and black, if you want to know). None of them were ever tender or hard, so it makes me wonder if maybe it's some sort of skin irritation or bite or something? I can tell you that the one that was melanoma started bleeding one day (which is what made me start examining it, and realizing that it had morphed).
Anyhoo, that's just my personal experience, for whatever it's worth. Keep me posted as to what happens!
