Maui Questions / Recommendations Needed!

My family is heading to Maui on Wednesday. We are very excited but most of my trips to Hawaii have been to Oahu and I haven't been to Maui since I was in middle school! I was hoping to glean some information from all the travelers on this board. :)

1) For those who have been there before, what were your favorite beaches? Any beautiful spots that can't be missed?

2) We will have a small kitchen at our Westin Villa, but still would like to eat one or two meals out a day. We will have a two and five year old with us, so we don't have much of an interest in the super expensive restaurants unless they have great happy hour/appetizer specials. Anyone have restaurant recommendations beyond what I read in the Revealed book? Any not to be missed restaurants? Places with killer Mai Tais?

3) We plan on doing the road to Hana, the sunrise at the crater, and a luau. Anything else we should consider? We'll be there eight days.

4) Is it typically too windy on Maui for sundresses? I live in central FL and we live in sundresses most of the year, but I'm thinking the wind may be strong on the island for them?

Thanks for any info you can offer!

Re: Maui Questions / Recommendations Needed!

  • We went to Maui last September with our then 15 month old and had a blast! We stayed in a condo for the first week then at the Ritz for the last five nights.

We did the Road to Hana, it was fun but a LONG day for all of us, we drove around the whole thing. We made a long stop at the Wai'anapanapa State Park.

Our favorite meals were pizza in Paia at the Flatbread Company and breakfast at The Gazebo in Lahaina. We had fun walking around in Lahaina for shopping and checking out local history too.  Flying Monkey or something like that in Kihei had THE best shave ice, they make all of their own syrups, it is in a little shopping center across the street from a city ( I believe) park.

If you have a smart phone, download the Revealed book app, it's very easy to navigate and has a neat feature that locates you and shows you what's available in the area.

The beaches in Kihei were fun. In Lahaina there is a beach behind Safeway that the locals refer to as "baby beach" we never made it that far but heard it was the best for kids.

We spent a couple hours at the aquarium too, not the best aquarium but worth checking out if you have the time. We also took a snorkel tour with our 15 month old and he stayed on the boat with grandma while we snorkeled, he did get in the water at Molokini with us.

Also the Maui Farmers market at the college was entertaining too, we went twice!  When we go back to Maui, I want to do the bike ride down the Crater, friends of ours did it while we were there and had a blast. If you're planning on going to the Crater, make sure you plan for the weather conditions, it's awfully cold up there!

     Have fun!
