Re: (Untitled)

  • Thank you! That was very helpful. Our lot is a corner lot, so I didn't even consider the people and the cars walking alongside the property. There would still be plenty of space to run the fence towards the back corner of the property that isn't lined by the sidewalk.

I think it's going to be something, if we decide to go with it, that we will do in the spring. So we will see how the neighborhood is with other dogs and people.

     Thanks again!

  • Our acreage is "invisible" fenced for our Catahoula, who can clear a 6-7 foot fence like hes a deer. My husband did some research, and we did the whole system ourselves which saved us $$$. Our receiver is Sport Dog brand, and we bought the shielded wire in a huge spool at our local farm supply (Wilco). Do some google searching, a lot of people do their own system for much cheaper. For us, there was no comparison if we had to hire someone to fence our property. However, I don't know how it equates out for smaller yards.

Training was easy, as he already knew how "back up" and "stop" on command, and only was shocked once. The fence system goes around our cattle fencing, and so we didn't do the flag training (you can buy the flags online too). The boundary 3 feet wide. In a week, he figured out to back up whenever he hears beeping/vibrating. But he is a very quick learner. However, we still escort him outside so we can keep an eye on what he's doing. Catahoulas are always up to no good! Luckily, he doesn't know he can bolt thru or hop over... yet...

We attempted to train our 12 year old Yorkie, using a much smaller collar from Petmate, from Petsmart that is on the same frequency as the Sport Dog receiver.  It made her panic so much that she wouldn't move when I would put back on the collar. So we decided to fence off a very small area, and she doesn't go outside the fenced area. We didn't continue training. So, some dogs do very well... others it may take longer or not work out.
