Hi Ladies,
It's been a carzy few days. I was in San Francisco on Tesuday & Wednesday. DH called me Wednesday morning to let me know that someone had broken into the 3rd stall of our garage. He stole a bunch of our tools, fireworks and DH's golf shoes. We believe he was driving around with a garage door opener looking for a door that would open.
Then the craziness really starts. I'm getting ready to head to the airport that night and my neighbor calls to say there is a man who is parked down the cul de sac by their house and was looking around in front of our house. The idiot CAME BACK! So they called the cops and the cops arrested him because they saw the items in his car that we had claimed as stolen that morning.
His Story:
He lives in Portland and Vancoucer and was in the neighborhood on Tuesday night to walk his dog. He likes to come to WASHOUGAL to walk his dog because it's peaceful and no one bothers you. He knows about the neighborhood because he helped build about 30 houses up here.
He then came back that night because he lost his cell phone while is was walking his dog. I told the officer that if I find his cell phone in my garage I'll be sure to return it to him.
So we spent the better part of the night identifying our stuff and writing statements. I'm just amazed at how dumb he was. I know criminals are not the brightest, hence why they are criminals, but wow this guy was dumb. At least take the items out of your car.
We have since realized that we have a switch on our garage opener on the wall to lock the doors so that no device can open them. The cops said this type of crime is becoming more common. So it might be something to look into, especially if you're going to be gone for the holidays.
Out of all of the places I've in LA and SF Washougal is the last place I thought I would get robbed.
Re: We Were Robbed...literally
Ok that is absolutely crazy! And scary. When I was in high school and lived in Beaverton with my parents, some guy broke into our house (while we were all asleep), made himself a sandwich, got a beer, picked up my parents 56 inch tv and slid it across the hard wood floor (face down), and then into the driveway. My mom woke up and was screaming- he ran out and the cops came. The best part? The guy was found hiding in our neighbor's bushes. What an absolute idiot.
I'm going to check our garage door opener- I never realized what the lock function actually did.
WOW what a crazy story. I'm thankful he didn't make it into the house. We have an alarm, but still. DH was home when he did it to. I'm just shocked that the dog didn't wake up. She normally would.
I feel bad for our neighbor. They just moved in about3 weeks ago and this was her first time alone in the house. She was a little stirred up because the guy was in front of her house too.
I'm just thankful it was a petty crime.
How scary!!! I'm so glad that you and your DH are ok, and that they didn't take anything more valuable from your home.
Are you going to get an alarm for your house?? I would be buying that neighbor a very nice bottle of wine!
Thanks ladies. We do have an alarm but it doesn't cover our garage. We were lame and didn't have the Brinks sign in our front yard. Which is now prominently displayed in our yard.
We went to the police station today because we had to be there when they issued the search warrant on his car. We got about half of our stuff back. But we're still missing the 2 big items, a table saw and Huskey toolbox.
Were fortunate that we got anything back. It's just a relief that he was caught.
P.S. Our new neighbors got ADT that day. We came home to an ADT card shoved in our door.
That's horrible! I'm glad things have worked out, considering what happened.
I also have a stupid robber story to tell. DH's car was broken into 2 yrs ago but the robber couldn't figure out how to start the car so he/she stole the replacement wiper blades he had in his trunk. Not his CDs, not his expensive sunglasses, nothing else. Just cheap wiper blades. Those are certainly worth breaking the law for.
That's so very scary. My mom was actually robbed at knife point last week, she works in Vancouver at a store in the Orchards area. I'm glad you are OK.
