Help with cat peeing on couch!

I'm never on this board, but I need serious help with my cat. I adopted him from the local humane society in January 2011. He was an about 5 year old stray. Humane society had neutered him Dec. 2010. He started peeing on the couch almost right away. I took him to the vet to see if he had a urianry tract infection or anything else that would be causing that. The vet told me it is rare for a male cat to have a urinary tract infection, didn't even test him for it, examined him, and said it must be a behavioral problem. The peeing acrually stopped for a few months, then started again. Took him back to the vet, this time saw a different dr. His urine was tested and found to have a very high crystal count. He was placed on a prescription diet that would help. The new diet worked great-no more peeing.

He did have a peeing incident when I was in the hospital giving birth to my daughter. I know that wasn't his fault though. My brother in law didn't scoop his litter box- he only gave him food and water. He always gets his litter box scooped every day other than that.

Yesterday, out of the blue, the cat peed on the couch! I don't know why. His box was clean, still eating prescription food, and nothing around the house has changed. I should have mentioned earlier that I also have 3 dogs. But, he is fine with them and they lay and play together. We do allow the dogs on the couch and my husband thinks he did it to mark his teritory. Why would he do that? He likes the dogs and it had about about a year since an incidents not counting the one in Feb. that wasn't his fault. We need to clean the couch with something that completly gets rid of the urine odor. (My husband also thinks he could have smelled some leftover urine smell from before.) We probably didn't use the right cleaner before. But again, why wait until now to pee?

Does anyone know what to clean my couch with? My husband said that once we get the smell completly gone and if he does it again and he has no medical reason to do it, we will have to get rid of him. Sad  Sorry this is so long, just didn't want to leave anything out. Please help!

Re: Help with cat peeing on couch!

  • I'd use Nature's Miracle to clean the couch.  It is possible that he smelled the urine.  I've never had a cat pee outside of the box so I can't offer much.

  • We have an FAQ in the green banner at the top of the board on cats peeing outside the box.  To me, it sounds like your issues are still medical and your vet is not meeting your needs on this.  Just because he is on the prescription diet doesn't mean he isn't having another UTI.  So first I would do the urine sample.  Katiescats has a kitty with a chronic medical peeing issue finally diagnosed as FLUTD I think through ultrasound.  The treatment is not 100% straight forward but I think they've had success treating.http://www.fabcats.org/owners/flutd/info.html

To reduce stress it doesn't hurt to use feliway diffusers, have a cat tree, and have more than one litterbox available.  Preferably more than one location if possible.

He needs to see the vet again and if his urine sample is clean you may need to see a specialist.  Your husband is wrong and acting like a d!ck.  I had a foster dog pee allll over my sofa earlier this year and you literally cannot tell thanks to the wonders of Nature's Miracle.  Got Pee is even better, but you have to special order it online.  Dumping a cat with medically related urinary issues, or any urinary issues, without actually exhausting efforts at medical treatment and behavioral modification is a death sentence.  I'm appalled that was discussed as an option in your house, my husband would be scared to even consider, much less voice, such an idea.
