I love my new job and am also falling in love with the Regent Square area. I work at the Environmental Charter School by the Biddle Ave tennis courts and usually park across S. Braddock on East End or Savannah. It appears to be a nice neighborhood, is it? I am actually considering making a move to that side of town and am unsure where to look or not look. Is there a general area that is more desirable? Where do you live (generally, I am not being creepy and asking for your address)? School district is not an issue because the girlies will be able to attend ECS as long as I work there.
Re: East End Nesties
We live in Highland Park and love it. Lots of families, big park, places to eat, near all the new retail in East Liberty. There is a lot to do near us and most things are easily accessible.
If we hadn't been able to find a house in HP, I would have considered Friendship, Bloomfield, Squirrel Hill, Point Breeze or Regent Square. All have some great old houses, good park access and walkable businesses/restaurants. Personally, I would look at municipal lines in Regent Square - I would favor being in the city of Pittsburgh over Wilkinsburg. I am familiar with the City Councilman for that area and like him a lot, so that would sway me. I don't know the differences in the tax rates or anything.
FYI - If you would find yourself in a situation where you were no longer working at ECS, there are a number of very good magnet PPS schools in the area, plus Colfax and Allderdice, which are good neighborhood schools. Heather will be starting at Linden in Point Breeze next week!
I don't live in the East End, but I work in a lot of the communities there, and I have a lot of friends who live in the East End. I love the architecture and the feel of the community in Edgewood. Swissvale has some really great homes and they are generally a little more affordable. Being right along the busline would be nice for getting around.
I actually have a number of friends who have bought in Wilkinsburg. The SD tax rate in Wilkinsburg is the highest, but you can get a lot of home for not a lot of money. Additionally, due to the SD and surrounding area, the homes are generally appraised lower, so that offsets the higher tax rate. ACTION Housing just built some beautiful, huge new homes and Pgh History and Landmark is planning a development in Wilkinsburg, as well.
If school district weren't a concern, I would move to the Edgewood or somewhere in Regent Square. Well, sd and the fact that my H won't move across the Agh River.

Congrats! I'm just up the hill from Regent Square in Squirrel Hill. I'm trying to get out of the city but there are many people who adore Squirrel Hill, Point Breeze, Highland Park, Regent Square area. I would stick to SH or upper RS boardering Point Breeze/Squirrel Hill versus Swissvale/Edgewood end. There are some simply gorgeous older homes in Regent Square and they are much more reasonably priced than SH, PB, Shadyside. I've lived in Squirrel Hill for 5+ years. It is wonderful to have a small town feel just outside the city. It is truly a walking community and family oriented. If you have more questions, feel free to message me.
I will say I had several encounters at the Regent Square playground which made me stop going there but it was during the kids baseball games and I do not know whether the children were "locals."
