We need to get new carpet in the entire house. Any suggestions as to where we should look? I'll price out Home Depot (no Lowe's by us in Apple Valley) but know that they don't have the best quality and all. This is already overwhelming me and we haven't even started to look so any pointers or suggestions as to where to start would be great, thanks!
Also, since I've never gotten new carpet before how does it work with furniture? Do THEY move all the furniture out of a room, carpet it and then move on to the next room and repeat? I'm almost 20 weeks pregnant and can't help DH carry all our furniture to the main level (hardwoods) from upstairs and am just unsure how that is done. Thanks!!

Re: Carpet?
We have HOM furniture coming out to measure our basement today for carpet. We compared their prices to Home Depot and we actually ended up with nicer carpet for less money at HOM and they have a sale going on right now through the 12th I think. As far as moving furniture, it will depend on who you use. Some places will move the furniture for an additional charge but most expect you do that.
We have also used Empire in the past, but I can't reccommend them. We thought their service was great as far as ordering and installing, but we have only had the carpet on our main level for a year and it is showing wear, not in the main traffic areas but in other places which get very little traffic. We had them out to look at it, since they have a 20 year warranty against these kinds of things and we still don't have a resolution. We have been fighting with them since June and supposedly our replacement carpet is on order but we'll believe when it's actually installed at this point. As long as you don't have any issues with the carpet, they are probably fine. Of course, I have no idea how any of the other places may be. I do know that Empire will move your furniture for a fee.
DH installed carpet for 12 years, I know a lot:)
A big thing to know is Home Depot, HOM, Empire, and Lowes all employ subcontractors to install their jobs (I know one other shop that does this as well, but you can PM me if you want their name). In DH's experience the majority of them do hack work. They take shortcuts and boot the carpet in instead of stretching it with pipes. DH worked as a subcontractor for a while and it did not work for him. They wanted him in and out as fast as possible or they lost money on the job. DH worked for a small shop for 10 years that prided themselves on quality, properly installed work and it was not the same world.
All the stores and shops will move furniture (not knicknacks and decorations, be sure to have all that cleared) for a fee. Some charge per piece of furniture and others charge a lump sum. Most of the time they will just move furniture from one area they are installing to the next rather than moving it off the level completely.
DH and I are big supporters of local shops that employ their own installers. They are going to have the highest standards for installation and best customer service.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
my read shelf:
Lawrence Interiors in Hastings was rec'd to us by a trusted contractor we know. They'd be worth checking out since they're in the area.
Oh how I would prefer hardwood in the entire house over carpeting though!! So much easier to clean/maintain!!!
We got carpet last fall from Seestedt's, they are located in downtown St. Paul and have been in business for ages...since 1920 or something. We shopped around some, and found they had some good discount prices on nice-quality larger remnants. I definitely recommend them.
Their installers moved furniture out and back of the room for a fee, I believe they charged per piece. It was worth it for us, DH had just had a hernia at the time and could not do any lifting.
Another place that could be worth a look is Metro Carpet Outlet, which is in North Minneapolis near 94/Broadway. They had some awesome deals on mill-end remnants, but we did not find anything that was quite right for us at the time.
Both places I mentioned are locally owned, and like a PP said, it is nice to go with a locally-owned place for carpet as you may get better service.
