2yr boxer

I have a 2 yr old boxer who has always been in great health. A coup;e of days ago she started hacking. After talking it over with previous boxer owners they said she probably has kennel cough. I dont want to seem crazy over dramatic but should I consult her vet? I also dont want to pay money for an answer of its nothing. Any advice?

Re: 2yr boxer

  • Kennel Cough can turn into some thing worse if not treated. I adopted a dog who had an upper respiratory infection and when I went to the vet, he had pneumonia. Better be safe than sorry.

I completely agree with this. Kennel Cough is VERY serious and can lead to death.

I used to work in a pet store when I was young and alot of the dogs had it and ended up getting very sick. It was not a reputable store and thankfully got shut down. I actually called the Humane Society on it.

     Anyways, consult your vet asap!

  • I also have a 2-year-old boxer (boxers rule!!), and agree with the others. Kennel Cough, aka bordetella, must be treated by a good vet. They'll likely ask you to call ahead and let them know when you're arriving so they can clear the waiting room. It's that contagious. My boy had it when he was a puppy, and it'll just break your heart listening to those hacks.

After he's cleared you might also consider the vaccine, especially if your dog is frequently around other dogs. Or even just places where other dogs go. They can catch it from surfaces (toys and even the ground).

  • Definitly take your dog to the vet, just in case it is something worse.  If it is nothing, at least you have peace of mind.  GL.

I agree with this. I would take your dog to a regular vet, as opposed to an "after hours" vet hospital if you're worried about cost. You'll have to go during normal business hours, but their office visit costs will be less than if you went to an emergency vet type of establishment.
