What can I do with this?

My SO's mother gave this to us when we moved in July. What can I do with it to modernize it? I don't have a set decor in the house right now, based on the fact that we have a lot of hand-me-downs I am trying to work with. Thoughts? HELP!

Re: What can I do with this?

  • Hey, pretty nice wall mirror. Even though it is not from the highest quality mirrors yet you can still display it nicely and enhance your room. Please post some photos of the rooms in your home so we get an idea how to go about it. Photos should include like, front entrance, living room, bath room, master bed room etc...
  • What is the decorative bit made of? That's really what's making it look very traditional. You could turn it into a chalkboard, maybe (chalkboard paint over the glass, maybe paint the frame a fun color, although the gold is nice too.)

    Options:

1.)  Top of stair case. Literally a blank canvas, because the walls are white (they will be painted down the road...but not yet.

2.)  Corner of living room which is directly across from the main entrance..

3.) Wall in kitchen entrance, the entire kitchen is being re-done next Summer but this is an option for now..

4.) Blank wall in dining room. Still need to finish the trim in here and the book case is not staying..

Those are the blank walls we have that need something...the kitchen I can handle bare since we are going to do a total remodel in a year, but if someone has a 'kitchen' themed idea I'll totally consider it. I do have a white board on the opposite wall already. Also, the detail that is colored is frosted painted glass, the gold detail throughout the mirror is raised.

  • If that little pattern/design is not raised, painting over it with chalkboard paint is a good idea. Can you scratch it off with a razor blade? The shape is pretty cool and would be a nice mirror with a different color frame.
  • According to the pictures you posted the most matching room to hang your wall mirror would be the dinning room (picture #4), center of wall not too high up, because your mirror isn't that big that it displays as itself.
  • I think painting the gold frame black might help.

  • I'd keep it a mirror and paint the frame white and the areas that have color on the mirror white too (might be tedious but I think it would look great and give it a unique look!).  I'd put it in the last picture above the console table.
