What did everyone think of Obama's speech?

since no one has posted this yet, thought I would.  Honest opinion from me:  I thought Biden's was better and Obama's sounded much like speeches of his past

  • Cadence  and delivery well done, but a little slim on the details.

Afterwards I just wanted to ask, "Where's the Beef?" He's been in office long enough to know exactly where he needs to go next and how he's going to get there.  Why not share a little bit of that plan?

  • I thought it was much like his previous speeches. I found myself zoning out at times. Biden knocked it out of the park!!!!
  • My favorite moment: when he called Romney on that dumb@ss comment from several  months ago about Russia. Yes

  • I thought the speech was very inspiring. I would definitely have liked to hear more specifics, i.e. dates and numbers on his plans, but since Bill Clinton had done that the night before for him, I think they had a different vision for his speech.

I felt very much like Romney and Ryan's speeches also lacked specifics. It was all vague promises and taking responsibility and reeling in spending. Give me numbers. I want data, facts, and deadlines.

Election after election candidates fail to deliver on details. It's frustrating!!!

I agree.  I feel like each camp is calling each other's bluff.  They know that the other guy isn't offering specifics, so they don't either.  Then they turn around and complain that the other guy isn't offering specifics.  So annoying.

To be honest though, when specifics are offered most voters ignore them anyway.  I mean, what percentage of America actually took time to understand the implications of the ACA, Romney-Ryan Budget Plan, etc.?  So annoying.

    This was my favorite too!

I thought it was pretty good...a lot like his other speeches but that's to be expected.  To tell you the truth, I zoned out during Biden's speech...it was so long.

It's very frustrating. I wish the public would talk about it more. In my opinion, we should be offended. Do they think we're not smart enough to comprehend the numbers in their plans?

We should be offended. I told my husband that just yesterday. I am tired of having them act like we are all too dumb to understand the plans. And I'm tired of listening to speech after speech with no substance, only buzz words.

  • The thing is, the majority of Americans ARE too stupid to understand details. Just look at how many people believe that Iraq had something to do with 9/11, that Obama isn't an American citizen, or that Obamacare created death panels for seniors.

I agree. The amount of dumb on my Facebook feed everyday is proof that most of the time politicians need to speak as if they're explaining things to 4th graders.

Although, maybe if politicians did include specifics in their speeches, those dumb people would do more of their own research and learn... But probably not.

The problem though is that the dumb people aren't the ones (mostly) watching the convention speeches or the debates. People who are already politically engaged don't spout the ridiculous stuff. People who insist upon the absurd are getting talking points from sensationalist headlines and one-liners from people like Palin (and mostly wouldn't stomach listening to Obama speak anyway).

Honestly though, I'm not too fussed by this lacking in substance, if only because the debates will (hopefully) have more of it, when Obama and Romney are side-by-side and actually have to explain why their grand schemes differ from one another. Conventions are nothing but pep-rallies. Why pretend differently?

This exactly.  The purpose of the speeches aren't to detail their exact plans.  They're to build party support.  I'm assuming we'll see more of the speeches aimed at independents/swing voters later this fall.

I took each speech with a grain of salt the last few nights, no matter how much I agreed with what they said.  The debates might help hash out a few of those specifics I'm looking for.

  • And the reason that nobody gives specifics or details is because the more details you give, the more you can be criticized. Nobody can criticize you for "we'll create jobs" or "we'll restore America's greatness."
