I don't know what to do about this and it's really worrying me!
My dog is almost 6 months old, we have had him since he was old enough to leave his mother. He is a shy dog and has to warm up around new people. He has always been a nervous dog, but lately he has been really weird. He has lately been refusing to go outside! In the morning I let him out of his cage and take him out right away. The past few days he has been refusing to go outside at all unless it is to go for a walk. When I call him, he won't come to me. I don't know what to do!
Does anyone have any advice?!

Re: So frustrating!
Whats the difference between going outside to potty and going for a walk? Do you put him on a leash to go for a walk and not to potty?
My guess would be that something spooked him while he was going outside to potty once and now he's afraid that the same experience will happen again. Do you go outside with him when he potties or just open the door to let him out? If you don't go out with him, I would start doing it and see if that helps any. Or if you walk him with a leash, just put him on the leash to take him outside then take it off or leash walk him to potty.
We do not usually put him on a leash to go potty, but we DO go out with him and even walk to the grass with him. He does not like to walk on the grass bc he doesn't like to get his feet wet. Since he has been displaying this new behavior, we have been putting him on the leash to go out because it's the only way to actually get him to go out at all. If I just open the door for him he lays down or walks away.
We are hoping it's just a phase. We will just keep using the leash and we will also try to spend more time with him together (both DH and me) with the hope that it will help.
Your dog is totally adorable. I love his gray whiskers! For the recall issue, I would work on the "come" command almost like when you taught it to him in the first place. Start in a place with no distractions (in your house) and a very short distance (or say "come" when he's already coming to you to build the association). Work up to longer distances in the house, and once he's solid on those, you can move to a low distraction area and build from there. My dogs have definitely had times when they need to be "reminded" of what a command means, so I just go back a few steps (or to the beginning), praise/reward very frequently for the correct behavior, and go from there. Doing other training, games, etc. with him could help build his confidence as well. GL!

building his confidence is key! positive re-enforcement is always a good tool to use as well. Is he afraid of storms/loud noises, etc? based off your description of his "nervous behavior" you may want to look into getting him a Thunder Shirt, they run about $40-$50 depending on where you get it but they work great for a lot of dogs! I bought one for my parents' dog who is afraid of his shadow/storms/loud sounds/etc and they said he's like a totally different dog when he has that on during a thunderstorm, no anxiety, no hiding, etc.
Good Luck!
this could possibly be it...
over 4th of july time the neighbor kids would like off the big boom fireworks, and this spooked my 1 year old great dane... we really had to coax him to go out (but only when it got dark outside) for about a week and a half past the 4th...
just, when you are out there with him... give him lots of praise so he knows its ok, and a good thing to be outside...
