WWYD, medical question

So most of you know I broke my foot earlier this summer.  It is healed. And I am out of my boot for a few weeks now. So life is back to normal. I went and cut a lot of wood with a hand saw though and seemed to have done something to my wrist. Not enough to keep me from typing, but when I rotate my hand it hurts. No bruising, minor swelling.  Tomorrow it will be a week from when I hurt myself.

Do I wait longer hoping for improvement? Do I call my ortho and have it looked at and bear the jokes about how I am a danger to myself and assure him I am not in an abusive relationship. Do I order a wrist brace on Amazon and pretend I am a doctor?  How long before I call a doctor?

  • Amanda - John is a PA for upper extremity surgeon at UPMC - will forward your post and see what he says.

  • Aw, thanks Shelia!  I am hoping it is just a muscle strain/sprain.
  • i have tendonitis or carpal tunnel-one of them. if i do a repetative movement for a short while i end up with a painful wrist that has no strength to it. if i wear a wrist/arm brace for a day or so, and definitely overnight, it usually helps. it's worth a shot while you figure out what to do.
Thanks to our wonderful RE our family is complete!

  • My recommendation: stay in your PJs all weekend and avoid manual labor at all costs.

  • right or left wrist?  I strained my right wrist at the gym right before our wedding (trying to get all buff and sh!t) and I believe I still have the brace I got for it.

  • It is my right, but I went to CVS at lunch to get a brace so I didn't have to stop on the way home to get one and ruin my plans to stop and get ice cream. hahaha.
  • Amanda - from John (so inciteful ;))

"Depends on where Her pain is. Likely an overuse injury. Would prob recommend ibuprofen and give it another week, then see someone (hand specialist) if not getting better."

If you end up needing to see someone let me know, his dr is good.

  • Thanks Shelia- hearing it wasn't totally insane to wait another week is reassuring. Hopefully it will resolve itself!
  • Ditto her husband!  Like a strain but the ibuprofen should help with any inflammation/swelling (that you may not see).

I'd recommend Brunton (first choice), Goitz or Kaufmann as Hand/Upper Extremity orthopods.  All are with UPMC.
