Should my 4 yr old DS being dressing himself by now?

So I have a DD who is 7.  Being a girl, she was very interested in picking out her own clothes and dressing herself by 3.  My Son who turned 4 in July can change his own pants/shorts and underwear but he is still unable to put on or take off a shirt.  My DH thinks that he needs to start trying harder.  I keep telling him that DD took to it at the age she did cuz she is a girl.  Should my DS be able to change his shirt by now?

Re: Should my 4 yr old DS being dressing himself by now?

  • Unless it's a very fitted PJ shirt, I would say yes. A basic long or short sleeved T shouldn't be a problem.
  • My MIL is an OTA and she's currently very annoyed that my 3 year old nephew is still being dressed by his mother each day.  She said by 3 kids with no delays should have no problem getting themselves dressed with little to no help.  When she was there with him for the day, she just laid the clothes out and when he asked for help she said, "You can do it.  Show me how you can do it yourself." and he did just fine on his own.

I'd be with your DH on this one.  It seems like your son is doing the hard part, which is the pants.  I'm sure with a little practice he'll be doing his shirts with no issue!
