Thermostat "battle"

Where we live, it's HOT in the summer.. no shade over our house and it gets to 95-100 degrees. I feel comfortable with the thermostat set at 78 degrees. Anything above that and I'm hot.

My husband keeps putting the thermostat at 81 degrees. At this temperature, it's just too hot.I keep waking up in the middle of the night, and can't get a good night sleep. Can't even sleep with a sheet, even with a fan on me, and I'm one of the types that needs a blanket to sleep well.

My husband feels it's cold with the temperature at anything below 80. I have tried to talk to him about a compromise but he just keeps turning the thermostat up.

I can't wait for this summer to be over so I can sleep well again!!!

Ladies, what do you have your thermostat set at when you're home? I'm just curious. Am I crazy to want it a little cooler in the house?

Re: Thermostat "battle"

  • We keep it around 73 degrees, if the air is on.
  • He can put another blanket on.  There is only so much you can take off.

    You win.  :)

And it's not like we're talking 10 degrees.  It's THREE.

This made me smile.  My husband likes 68 and I much prefer 73.  Five degrees actually makes a big difference to me - at 68, my nose is running and I'm shivering even in long sleeves and pants.

But, these are rather different temperatures than 78 and 81!  I would loooove our apartment that warm, but my husband would move out.  He barely handles 72.  I guess we all fight our thermostat wars.

We compromise by changing the temp a lot.  If I'm home, it's set where I like it.  When he comes home, he makes it a bit cooler.  I do turn it down at night so he can sleep well.  Trying to sleep when you're too hot is not fun and I try to respect that.

  • H and I don't neccessarily have a thermostat battle (he knows that's a battle he won't win) but instead a fan battle. I like it 747 speed due to being a "hot sleeper." One thing that really helped was getting heat resistant pillows and bed sheets.

  • My only suggestion is to get this thermostat called nest. I think it's at nest dot com and you can control it from your phone so I secretly adjust it all the time lol

I will say that it can be TOO cold.  68???  I'm with you- I'd be FREEZING w/ it that cold.  We keep our house at around 75/ 76 and while sometimes (On really warm days) that's a little warm - all in all, it's comfortable.

    I'd be miserable at 68.

  • I would be dying if we kept the thermostat at 78, especially with it so hot outside! Our thermostat is programmed to cool to certain degrees at certain times during the day, so while we are at work we have it go up to 85 (it never gets that hot in our home but it's just to keep the AC off while we're away), around 4pm it kicks on to 74, and at 10pm it starts going down to 70. I feel the same way about sleeping, I have to be able to sleep with my comforter on so it has to be cool in our room. Luckily my DH feels the same way so there is never a fight over the thermostat.
  • We live in Houston, where it is hot, hotter, and death :-D LOL.

We keep the house at 78 during the day and at 75 during the night. FI would like it cooler, but since I don't like it much cooler, we compromise on it.

  • We live in the northwest..where it never gets super hot, but it does get warm in the summer...we turn our heat off in June and probably will turn it on at some point this month...therefor no battles (Im sure if we had AC that would be a different story), and we save a crapload of money by not running it at all.

I am the cold one in our house, and we usually just find ways to compromise. For sleeping if its too hot for H (the hot one) he can open a window OR turn on the fan but not both unless I am hot too....etc.

  • I love it around 72-73. H would rather it be about 68. I usually win because he'll just complain it's "hot" and not touch the thermostat.

The other week we lost power, our house was in the 80s-90s. It was miserable. I don't see how you can do 78 or 81. I'd suffocate.

  • I would be dead in your house.

We keep our thermostat between 65-68 all year round.  I hate being hot.  I win the argument based on the fact that he can put on a sweatshirt if he's cold but there isn't much I can do when I'm dying of heat and already in shorts and a tank top.

  • I'm the cold one. but the thing is that I do NOT warm up with blankets and clothes.  The only way I seem to get warm once I'm cold is to take a bath.  Therefore, DH is pretty nice about keeping the house warm for me.  We also turn the thermostat down at night for sleeping, but he doesn't turn the fan on until I'm buried under blankets and he always turns it off before I get out of bed!
  • I would kick him out of the room and add an a/c unit to my room.  I would get migraines in that sort of heat.
