Freaking out-work related

I work for a home remodeling company in the Boston area and to be honest, business isn't great right now. We have some jobs going on, but nothing new and not much "in the works" for projects to start/contracts to be signed soon.

I call in payroll in the office, and I was told today to not call it in, since we might not have the $ to cover the cost.

If we sign a new contract then I can call in payroll sometime later this week and everything will be fine. BUT, if I can't call in payroll I'm going to be totally screwed! I have bill payments automatically coming out of my account this week, we're going to a wedding on Saturday, and I just gave a lot of our savings to my brother (he's our financial advisor) to invest.

Ugh, this sucks!!!

Re: Freaking out-work related

  • Wow that completely sucks! I don't even know what to say.

H works in construction and it is super slow right now they have had like nothing lately. They finally got work this week but it's just a weeks worth of work. To top it off there are 3 of them working instead of just 2 so that makes the job shorter with no promise of work next week.

I hope it gets better for you so that you can get paid!

  • YIKES! Can they really just not pay you? Don't they have a line of credit they can draw from or something? Any chance your brother didn't invest everything yet?

No line of credit....over the past year or so things have been slowing down, but we've kind of been promised that "things will pick back up" and since we've always gotten paid, it seemed like we'd all be ok. This is the first time this has happened.

The woman I work with in the office is only going to be here for a couple of hours each day to save some $ for next week's payroll. I'm going to be taking a few hours off each day for now until we sign some more contracts with people.

I can probably get some of the $ back from my brother if I have to...I just really want my paycheck instead!!!

  • Yikes! That is so scary! Hope they work it out so you dont have to worry.

  • That is really terrible! I don't see how they can just not pay you. You would think that the company would have something set up for emergencies like this. We've had some instances like this at the vets office, in our winter months we are super slow, and our boss has always said she would just not pay herself (she mades roughly $1800 every 2 weeks) in order to pay us first. I wonder if the big wigs where you work would be willing to do something like that for their employees.

See the thing is, is that we're a really small company and the owner has already taken a week off from getting a paycheck (last week) and he said he'd go without another one if the company needed him to but even still we don't have the funds for all the paycheck plus all the extras that go along with payroll (taxes etc.)

Hopefully we'll sign at least one contract this week and be able to get paid for working last week...

  • I'm sending you good nestie vibes hoping this works out!!!
  • Oh no, I'm so sorry.  I would definitely see if you can get the money back from your brother, just in case.
