Hey everyone! I'm new to the board and am anxious to get some decorating advice. We recently decided to renovate our garage into an office/living area/playroom. I would also like to use the space as a homeschool room once my daughter starts kindergarten. We are building a dummy wall in front of the garage door so that whoever moves into our house next can easily convert it back into a garage.
Well, of course my mind is completely on decorating the room, even though we still have a lot to do before we're ready for that step.
My vision for the room is for it to look fresh and clean. I would like to paint the walls white and use bold accent colors that really pop. We already have a red couch (more like a futon), so I guess red will be the main focal color.
After all that, here's the meat of my dilemma... I can't decide what color to paint our furniture. Right now, I'm picturing white, but is that going to be weird againist a white wall? Would you do different shades of white? I just want to stay fresh and clean, only accenting the couch, rug, lamps, a couple of bean bag- type chairs and artwork. I can't see any other color furniture looking tasteful with the red couch, but I don't want to be monotonous either. I don't want to be scared of color, but I want to be sure to use it tastefully.
Any ideas/advice would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!
Re: Introduction- anxious for advice!
I'd hesitate to do white. White works in gorgeous rooms with great architecture. White does absolutely nothing for a plain drywall box. A nice tan will warm up the space and help conceal its humble origins. You may have "clean" visions, but I think it'll end up feeling like what it is: a converted garage, and I've never been in a converted garage that didn't feel cold and unfriendly. I'd paint the furniture black.

Thinking of doing cosmetic updates to a dated home? These were our costs.
That's makes a lot of sense. Especially since the only window in the room is the one on the door that leads to the back patio.
The room is currently painted a very light tan and it just feels so dark as it is... that's the reason I am looking for something bright- to liven it up a bit.
Thanks so much for the advice! That's what I was hoping for!
If it feels dark and it's a light tan, that's a lighting problem, not a paint problem. What kind of lighting do you have? Only the overheads that came with the garage?

Another vote for black furniture.
