What grade would you give Obama and Romney for campaign strategy, and why? I got this idea from a Laura Ingraham show. I was listening to hear more about the Chicago teachers strike...
Considering everything, I would give both Obama and Romney a C. It could change. What is lifting Romney's campaign is the choice of Paul Ryan. I'm starting to worry that Romney isn't staying on message enough, isn't talking about the economy in enough detail. I'd really like to know what loopholes that he wants to close.
I gave Obama an average score because I feel that it's been a rather flat campaign; they're eschewing issues in favor of "likability" and extreme catering to group identity. I feel that a better candidate would be beating him decisively given the economic climate. (Mitch Daniels was the one I wanted.)
Re: Give Obama and Romney a grade for campaign strategy
I would agree with an average rating for both. Obama is playing to not loose and Romney is simply avoiding specifics and relying on the right's motto of "anyone but Obama."
We see ads all the time. There are a few with regular voters that catch the eye. There's also a Romney ad that's on all the time about jobs and the economy. The ObamaCare/Medicare ad seemed pretty good. I need to watch the Rundown on MSNBC to see where the biggest ad buys are.
Romney was doing well with the Ryan pick and the aftermath, but now in the wake of an Obama bounce he needs to talk more about specific economic issues. It's hard for me to see what is going wrong. The Ohio race should be a lot closer. I thought about the electoral college about a year and a half ago. Romney should've already banked North Carolina and Indiana now, have a lead in Florida and Ohio, and be working on the coup de grace in Colorado, Iowa, New Hampshire, and Wisconsin. That is not happening.
That being said, I disagree with Nate Silver's numbers that every swing state except NC are going Obama. That's not feasible in this economic climate.
We see a ton of ads as well. DH made a comment the other day that perhaps we should watch trashier tv because I bet they don't have all these ads during Honey Boo Boo. Most of the ads we see are PAC bought, however. There are a few Romney for Prez and Obama for Prez ads but PAC outnumber those by far.
The ads here in DC metro target women and the economy. And they are most geared towards VA since MD and DC are as blue as they come.
I think a C for both is pretty accurate.
Obama gets a C because he's not doing enough to counter the arguments that have been levied against him about the economy. The speech Slick Willy gave at the convention was exactly the sort of stuff we should have heard from Obama all along. Don't talk about the social issues, focus on the economy, healthcare, and education. That's the key to winning the moderate vote.
Romney gets a C because he's just a flat candidate. He's impossible to get energized or excited by him. The Ryan pick does help that aspect, but I think it also turns off some of the moderates that Romney could have obtained. The biggest reason for the C though is his refusal to talk about the issues in detail. We want and deserve details of his plans. I also think he should have looked down the barrel of the "flip flopper" gun long ago. He should have used a prime time interview as an opportunity to express why some of his decisions had "evolved" and why his ability to change his mind about things when presented with new facts make him a good leader.
I would say the same about a C. Romney needs to be more aggressive. He hasn't beein in attack mode enough imo. He could be losing potential votes. Obama has been kinda meh (same old).
