Re: In your own words
And from these anecdotes we may conclude that now most people on assistance are abusing it?
That's what I'm reading?
I have family members that abuse the system. It doesn't mean everyone on assistance does, or that even the great majority does.
Why is this concept so hard to grasp?
I didn"t say everyone was on it. just pointing out that it does happen more than you think
You said MOST people abuse the system, then told a fun story about your family.
Anectotal evidence FTW!
Seriously though, I'm gonna need some real evidence and statistics before I jump on y'alls hate bandwagon.
Because you have personally witnessed system abuse does not mean it happens more than people think.
That's what she did. It's not what I would do, but I guess others would . also, you could still put them on your school loans and not pay a dime ever.
Either you're making this story up or the lady was messing with you. It's not possible to defer student loans indefinitely. There are time limits, typically 7 years from disbursement, when you're required to begin repayment regardless of whether you're still in school.
Socialism is the economic idea that everyone pays in and everyone gets something in return. Everyone pays a little of their taxes towards health care, everyone gets healthcare. It's the idea that supports everyone in the community. An "us" instead of "me" economic policy. It's how most other developed nations operate and do very well with.
As for the antecdotes above, Cats and Vgal (?) seem to have a very short memory. The state of Florida did drug testing for assistance recipients and found that such a small percentage of recipients were doing drugs that it cost the state more just to conduct the test than to keep everyone on assistance. D'oh.
And as for "witnessing it with your own eyes." Really, are you serious? I can not roll my eyes hard enough. Unless you have access to their bank account, financial records and employment history, you haven't seen anything.
Anecdotal evidence for the win!!!!!
So you take the word of someone who broke privacy laws by discussing another student's finances and payments? Nice.
I remember the article. I think it said less than 2%, and of those they were able to discount some due to legitimate prescription drugs that also show up on drug tests.
I think the new party line of the Bible thumpers is 'God helps those who help themselves,' which saves anyone from having to worry about things like helping their neighbors. Clearly, if the neighbors were helping themselves adequately, assistance would be unnecessary given the resulting divine intervention.
