Dressing for a casual wedding?

DH's cousin is getting married on a cliff in Ohiopyle in a few weeks and then the reception is at a VFW hall nearby. The couple actually already eloped and this is more of a quickly planned celebration, but they are apparently still having a ceremony even though they are already married...anyway...

The invitation says the wedding is casual. I may be able to convince DH to wear pants instead of jeans, Heather will want to wear a dress, and I'll put Todd in a button down shirt with khakis.

I have no idea what to dress myself in...my two favorite dresses are ones that I wore to SIL's wedding and events last year and my other dresses are too dressy for a casual wedding or they are black.

Would you consider wearing something other than a dress to a casual wedding? If so, what? And if not, have you seen any cute summer/fall dresses lately with an a-line skirt that isn't sleeveless?

Re: Dressing for a casual wedding?

  • Could you get away with a nice tunic/sweater dress leggings with flats or boots?

  • For what you're describing, I think you could definitely get away without wearing a dress.  I'd probably hit the summer clearance racks for a print skirt and pair it with a cardigan.

  • Oooh I just saw that Lands End has 30% off dresses right now though.  There is a gorgeous purple shirtdress that is practically screaming your name.    :D

  • i wore leggings/boots and a cute top to a similar sounding event last year.  There were of course people in jeans and flannels and then cocktail dresses on the opposite end of the spectrum.
