Lowlights/Highlights?

Are highlights/lowlights still in?

My natural hair is "dark ash brown" but i have been dying it "dark mahogany brown" for years. Im starting to get greys and was wondering if i might start getting low/highlights instead. I was considering some copper colors. My eyes are blue but i don't like they way blonde highlights make me look. (and no, embracing the grey is not an option, im still in my 20s!! :))

Any suggestions? What have you tried to make your color last?

Thanks in advance ladies :)

Re: Lowlights/Highlights?

  • I have highlights...I hope they aren't "out!" I love them because it adds dimension to my hair when I'm too rushed to really style it well.

  • I think natural looking coloring to your hair is always "in"- but the super chunky highlights/lowlights look dated to me.

I do both-highlight and lowlight my hair (a couple shades up and down from my natural or "base" color.) I usually ask for more high/less low in the spring and summer and more low/less high in the fall and winter. I've noticed that when I have lowlights in addition to my highlights I can go longer between appointments because the growth at my hairline blends in a little with the darker shades my stylist has added in.

I also try to avoid washing my hair for 24-48 hours after I have my hair colored- that seems to keep the color a little more vibrant. Lastly, I've been told too much sun exposure to your hair can fade your highlights/turn them funny colors although I really think the effects depend on what your natural color is and what color you've added in- either way if I'm going to be out and about all day I try to wear a hat.

  • I don't think that they ever really go "in" or "out" - kind of like covering up your grays never really goes "out" of style!  I'm 27 years old with dark blonde hair and I get highlights and lowlights...just gives the hair so much more dimension.

I have really noticed a difference in my color lasting since switching to the Purology line shampoo/conditioner, which I buy from the salon.  I've also weaned myself from washing my hair a ton.  I used to be a every other day girl (and wishing I was an every day girl!)  By switching my shampoo I noticed a difference right away.  Then I went through a period of time where I started getting lazy and then washed only every 3rd day for a couple of weeks (sounds gross, but I wear my hair up everyday for work so it wasn't really noticeable).

I then got back into my every other day washing habit, but I then started noticing that on the "every other" day, it wasn't really greasy/oily and didn't need to be washed.  Now I wash it on Mondays, Thursdays, and one weekend day.  My scalp is SO much healthier than when I was washing it like crazy - my scalp was a crazy combo of dry/itchy or oily almost immediately.  I NEVER would have thought that I could that long in between.

Anyways...my point is, my color lasts a lot longer and looks better now that I'm a) using better shampoo and b) washing it less often.  I'd ask your stylist for shampoo recs, it really does make a difference!

  • I think if you keep it looking fairly natural and non-chunky, you'll be fine. :) I think stark contrasts between hair color and highlights/lowlights look outdated.

  • The Ombre is a really popular option, light on bottom and darker on top. It looks super trendy and the dimension is really nice.
