I Changed my Name!

I just went today and changed my name at the SSA Office. It was painless. They gave me a letter so I can go tomorrow and get a new drivers license and whatever else. I'm so glad it was easy!

Re: I Changed my Name!

  • I was surprised by how easy it was at the SSA Office, my wait was about an hour but other than that it was painless!  I'm working on changing my name on credit cards and other accounts now.

I was able to go directly to the DMV after the SSA Office, the DMV just needed my marriage certificate.  Is it different in your state?

  • I just mailed my passport and marriage license to SS for a new card. And brought another copy to the DMV to get my new license.

ETA: SS mailed both the passport and marriage license back to me the next week.

  • I did everything in a day and it was pretty easy, but I did send my passport out a couple of weeks ago and haven't gotten anything back.  They cashed the check though so maybe I'll get it soon.  Everything else, like accounts at appointment places, I change as I go along.

  • I've changed my name with SSA, DMV, my bank, my debit card, my credit cards, my insurance, and my job.  Now I'm just working on doing if for all of the random other places I can think of.  I am also procrastinating changing the name on my passport, because there is a pretty hefty renewal fee if you have had it for over a year and need to change your name.
  • We don't have a DMV so basically the next big things I have to go are my license and Passport . . . I'm dreading the passport

I am definitely not looking forward to the Passport. It's basically a full renewal so its only like $200 with rush. I still have 5 years left on my current Passport and I'm feeling cheated, lol. I  have to do it asap because my job requires random travel.

A friend told me you could get and endorsement (stamp) in your passport with your new name, but I haven't found much on the net about it. I really can't chance not being able to get this endorsement.

  • Yup I changed mine, but only with SSA, drivers license and the bank. My work said that they need the new social security card in hand before they'll change it, which is a PITA.

In general it's been easier than expected, but of course I haven't done the dreaded Passport yet...

  • I went to the SSA yesterday and the DMV today.  I need to wait to have my new Social Security card in hand for work.  Next I'll work on the bank and all my credit cards.  I don't have any immediate travel plans out of the country, so I will probably do passport last.

So exciting though! I walked out with a brand new license this morning!  Didn't have to wait for it to be mailed to me or anything.

  • So far I've done SS, HR at work, credit cards, bank, amazon, pharmacy, fb (lol)- I'm holding of on my license because we should be moving soon and if I'm gonna have to pay for a new card anyway, I might as well get my new address on it too.

  • So exciting! I mailed my info in for SS because I don't have any PTO left and I have heard that you wait a few hours at our SS office. I got my drivers license changed already though, my bank accounts and the last thing I have is to change my name at work. But I need my new social security card before I can do that. It feels good to almost have my name fully changed over!
