Talk to me about your suv....

I don't know which board would be most appropriate for this post, but, oh well!

I am trying to decide what suv I want to purchase...I want something excellent in the snow and that will last a while...and preferably not terrible on gas but I know that's not likely for an suv.

any pros and cons about your suv would be very helpful!? also, we were looking into jeeps but I heard they flip easy...?

Re: Talk to me about your suv....

  • I had a 1999 Toyota RAV that I bought while I lived in Vermont. It was good in the snow, and had good clearance. It is still going strong today so that's 13 years--my soon to be exH has it now. I never really evaluated the gas mileage so I don't know how it is in comparison to other SUVs. I thought it was a great car, without being as huge as many SUVs are.

  • I had a 2001 toyota rav4.  It was the all wheel drive one.  Wasn't bad on gas, was bulletproof reliable, and they hold their value well when it comes time to sell.

  • The new jeeps have a wider stance that has fixed the easy to flip issue I bought a 2012 model 4 door wrangler this year and love it! We've had it in some iffy places and at times not on all 4 wheels, it has yet to flip. Unless you are doing extreme rock crawling or something really stupid on the road, it won't flip. Check out the safety ratings on the ones you like. My mom was worried about her future grandbabies being in a jeep until I showed her they have they same safety rating as her ford escape. I love that my jeep can be a daily driver (18 or 19 around town and 20 or 21 on the highway) or a fun toy to go out and play with on the weekends!

  • I have a 2010 Rav 4 Limited.  I went with the 4-cylinder because I wanted better gas mileage.  I drive it almost exclusively in the city, and get maybe 18 gal/mile.  It would be higher if I drove on the highway, but Instead, it's all stop & go traffic. I feel much safer driving in the snow with the 4x4 than I did in my car.  It's on the smaller side so It's easy to drive, park, etc.  It still has plenty of trunk space, and the back seat is roomy.  I've had it for 2 1/2 years, and haven't had a single issue with it.

  • We have a 2008 Subaru Forester and love it, it's good on gas being only 4Cyl. and its nice to feel like you have loads of space in a reletively small SUV. We do mostly hwy/city driving, but it holds up really well when we do venture out onto 4x4 terrain or loading it up with stuff to finish the basement...and can still fit in a small car parking space at the mall!
  • I have a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee that I bought a little over a year ago and I really enjoy it! We live in Connecticut so the AWD is perfect for the snowy winters. The new editions are so nice, I will definitely be upgrading in a few years once I pay off the current vehicle.
  • my lease on my land rover lr3 just expired recently. i LOVED that truck. it was amazing in the snow, rain, sleet-whatever. tons of room, great features, handles super well. as for the mileage-meh-not the best. you can't beat land rover service though. service is included in the lease as well.

  • 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee and it's awesome; just like any other vehicle, reasonable upkeep will keep it going so much longer and it gets me to work in upstate NY. Love it!
  • We have a Ford Flex (Crossover SUV) and love it.  It sits lower to the ground so it isn't as tippy as some of the traditional SUVs and it is decent on gas mileage (19 city, 26/27 freeway) for a vehicle as big as it is.
  • Thanks for all the helpful responses :)
  • Late to the party, but I've had a Hyundai Sante Fe for the past 4 years, and, when it's time, I'll be getting another. Love this vehicle! Comfortable seats 2 adults and a carseat in the back and two in the front while also having room in the back for stuff.
