Help Decorating Bathroom with Blue Tile (PIP)

Hey girls!

It's been a while since I've been on here but I was looking for some help.

Our bathroom has the hideous blue tile walls.  It looks similar to this.

The tile goes about halfway up the wall and has a white tile border.  Our floors is the small square tile each one a different shad of blue.  We are looking to spruce up the bathroom however we are leaving the all of the tile as is.  Our plan so far is to:

Stain the oak vanity a darker espresso color. And replace the sink, hopefully with a white one. (It is currently an off white seashell shape)

Do an open closet similar to this however ours is a lot wider.  But it'll have the laundry basket at the bottom, a few white bins, and then towels.

My questions are, what color should we paint the walls?

Should we paint the inside of the closet white or match it to the walls since it'll be open?

What kind of shower current would you put up?

What kind of window treatments would you put up?

This is our current shower current, and while I like it I don't love it.  I've realized our style is more modern.

TIA!

  • I'd embrace it and not fight it.  My mom had those exact tiles (and floor tiles) growing up, so I know what you're talking about.

I'd paint the vanity white, not stain it brown, because blue and brown is 2006.  This bathroom is older than yours, but see how it feels fresh?

Depending on what you're in the mood for, I might consider taking the blue of the tile to the walls.  In my mind, it would have the same effect as this, but you'd have to try it to see if you like it. Get a pot of sample paint at the store and paint a piece of poster board with it and tape it up and see how you like it.

  • You can get the tiles reglazed for a couple hundred bucks.  Otherwise, I would suggest white and just go with a clean look.  Blue and white are great bathroom colors.

Thank you!  I thought about painting the cabinet white but I'm afraid I'll end up having everything white.  I just picture our shower curtain, rugs, curtains, walls, vanity, etc all to be white. I know white is in now and I like the freshness of the first picture but I don't want it to be over kill.  I guess I could incorporate blue and maybe another color with our towels and decorations.  (I plan on put two shelves above the toilet with a picture or two and candles etc.)

  • I know there is a way to paint over them if that is something you are considering. They are have some nice tutorials on pinterest.

  • I would use yellow accents.

Blue, white and yellow is a crisp combo, and you do not have to worry about finding the 'right' shade of blue to match the tile.

  • I would suggest grey as your third color.  It's another neutral so it balances out the blues without competing with them.  It also keeps the clean, fresh feeling of a blue & white bathroom.

  • I think I like the idea of grey too...especially if your style is more modern...there is a way to paint tiles...might not want to do all of them but I'm thinking if you could do every few ones a crackled silver look over the blue it would bring it all together.

I like that shower curtain...maybe Navy as another choice for the shower curtain.
