Deployment and Memories

This is our first deployment and already i'm thinking about the months to come without him being home with me.  I'm anticipating that day when he will leave and how I will be emotionally throughout the goodbye - a part of me wants to remain strong, I don't want his last vision of me in person to be a tearful, banshee like moment.  Another part of me don't know what to expect, especially when you're surrounded by other families and watching them go through their goodbyes too.

However, once the goodbye is over, how do you live with all of the memories you have together without turning into a crazy person - one minute laughing and the next crying.  So, this is what this thread is about - putting those memories to good use.

1. Make the photos you have into useful, creative mementos that you could have and to share with your SO - stitchagram.com is a place where you can upload your instagram and (non-instagram) photos and create a pillow to give to them or keep for yourself.  I really like this idea and also there are other websites which offer similar deals at lower prices (any photo website - walgreens, walmart, shutterfly)

2. Create care packages of all the silly things they love - at least it will give him a good laugh and show him how much  you care.  Mine would probably be full of geeky stuff

WHAT IDEAS DO ANYONE ELSE HAVE???? PLEASE POST

Re: Deployment and Memories

  • I have been through more than one, as as my husband. This last one, I just decided to be sane. I made a concerted effort to focus on the good stuff, and I genuinely tricked myself into being excited for him to leave. Here's how.

    • Combat deployments help with promotion
    • This is why he joined the military
    • I made budgets and cut down on my spending while still making efforts to go on trips and activities that helped keep me sane.
    • We saved in H's Savings Deposit Program http://www.dfas.mil/militarymembers/payentitlements/sdp.html 10k over the course of his deployment with amazing interest
    • I worked a ton of OT, so we made even more money. We paid off both vehicles and are on track to max out our Roth IRAs this year.

Just don't feel sorry for yourself. If you need a day or are having a rough time, take the day, but only the one day. Reach out to your family and friends, don't use the excuse that nobody understands to isolate yourself. Even if they don't get it, they love you, and that's what matters. And don't just sit around. Work, go to school, volunteer. Do all three. I graduated a few years ago, but I worked 5 days a week and volunteered 1. Made the time fly.

    Good luck!

A lot of us moved over to proboards which is why this board is so slow. If you google GBCN Proboards, you can find us.

I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
