Just landed a new job today and start on Monday. The look of the office looks like business casual and not exactly sure what that all covers. Also where can I find business casual pieces for less?
Re: What is Business Casual
Khakis and a nice top, no tank tops though - I always wear sweaters, button up shirts, shirts with collars.
this link may help - sorry, don't know how to make it a clickable link
http://www.collegefashion.net/fashion-tips/what-to-wear-to-work-or-an-internship/Agree with the posts above-- I would buy enough pieces to get you through a week or two then plan a bigger shopping trip. Be sure to note not just what people are wearing but also the general style- is it more conservative or is there a creative/quirky/casual vibe? Think about how the office style can mesh with your personal style (i.e., if it's more conservative you could wear a subtle yet distinctively "you" accessory.) Also note things such as whether or not other women wear darker or bright nail polish, natural or full make up, peep toe shoes, sandals, etc.
Old Navy is a great place to pick up decent cardigans for cheap, and you can get inexpensive pants and pencil skirts from Target- I would advise you to stay away from their knitwear though...it doesn't last very long, and as with anything of course you get what you pay for. Cheap clothes will wear like cheap clothes but if you're just starting out or at the beginning of your career (like me!) it's kind of necessary.
Tops can be found at H&M, Target and Old Navy and you can check the sales at Loft, Gap, Anthropologie, The Limited and Banana Republic. Try to go to a Banana store if you can, they usually have more sale inventory in-store and items that are not marked down online. I occasionally find items at New York and Company- the trick is to really be on the look out often, almost all of the stores listed above will sometimes run specials between 30-40% off all items, and occasionally an additional 50% off sale items which is the time to stock up- sign up for their mailing lists if you're not adverse to a ton of e-mail or just check the sites a couple times a week.
. Best of luck in your new job and happy shopping!
I agree with everything the others have mentioned. Also, be aware that Business Casual does not typically include jeans.
However, at my Business Casual office, they have recently allowed jeans - I usually wear a trouser cut jean when I'm wearing jeans to work. On "casual" Fridays I can get away with skinny jeans with a suit jacket. Also, I always dress up my jeans with heels. You'll find out quickly if your new office allows jeans, since it is typically popular with most employees.
