Drywall Question

My SO and I aren't overly handy but we figure that at some point we need to learn but we're trying to gauge what projects are within our skillset.

The house we purchased has an intercom system.  I'd like to have this removed.  I worry that once we take it out we're going to have really big holes in the wall.  Has anyone repaired large wall holes?  Is this something that's relatively easy?

Re: Drywall Question

  • cutting and replacing drywall is simple...the hard part the taping and mudding to make sure you have no seams showing after you finish. We have seams showing in probably 50% of the rooms in our house that was done by 'professionals'. When we did our basement we did it all ourself and then hired someone good to mud and finish it so we wouldnt have that problem again.
  • How big are the intercom cut outs? I would yank it out and use a patch to cover it up rather than using actual drywall. You can get this at Lowe's - they come in a ton of different sizes. You just stick it over the hole, spray with water to get it to actually stick, then use spackle (crap, is that what it is called? That is what we call it) to cover over it. Then paint. Very easy.
