Natural Family Planning (NFP) Question.

DH & I are using the NFP method.  I have purchased OPKs, BBT, and I track also my CM.  I'm fairly new with learning my cycles...

Fertility Friend (FF) has not detected O yet, however I am on CD 7.  OPK is saying negative, but a test line is now showing today versus two days ago where it wasn't present.

When would you use a backup contraceptive to avoid a pregnancy, now until the test line is gone?

Re: Natural Family Planning (NFP) Question.

  • Get a copy of taking charge of your fertility. It gives you several charts to track your cycle and by then you will have it all figured out. It is a great book. I don;t know what OPK's are, but it is always better to be safe than sorry with birth control.
  • Use backup until you figure your cycle out and even then it is not fool proof. I would not use this method if you truly do not want another child.

This. We are currently avoiding pregnancy, but my cycles aren't regular yet, (didn't get AF until 10 mo. postpartum) so we use backup a lot. Hopefully that can decrease once my cycle is more predictable. And like PP said, although FAM can be very accurate, it's not the best way if having another child is out of the question.

  • If you don't want to use hormones why not try the ParaGard IUD? It's hormone free. That way you don't have to use this method. FF is helpful in TTC more so than TTA. Good luck!

  • We are using it to TTA.  Of course everyone is different but I don't O till around day 14.  I start using OPKs around day 11.  If there is a faint line, we use back up.  We keep using back up till there isn't a line anymore and FF has given me an O date.  It could also be when you are testing.  I know testing right away when you wake up isn't the best.  Some women will test twice a day about 12 hours apart.  I usually just do it after work in the evening.

I would also get Taking Charge of your Fertility.  I reference is a lot.  You can usually find a cheap used copy online.

    Good Luck!

  • I love my Paragard!!! No hormones, no condoms, no worrying about getting pregnant before we want to! It's awesome. That is all I came to say Big Smile
