How long did it take you...

...to be completely used to your new last name? I got married June 2nd and I still have to think about it for a second when I write or say my new full name. It's weird to have a name for so long then completely change it! :-)

Re: How long did it take you...

  • It felt weird the first few times addressing myself differently and signing my name, and a few times I have actually signed my previous name instead of my new one.Oops! :P So I'm sure it will take a while to get used to. I love it though. :)

  • It was a few months I'd say. It took me longer to get use to being addressed as MrsH'sfirstnameH'slastname than MrsmyfirstnameH'slastname.

I still get called by my maiden name by friends who knew me before I got married and it's been three years now. Smile

  • It still feels different. I got married in May. I accidentally registered for something yesterday under my maiden name, so it's still happening! I love my new name, but when you're used to doing one thing for 20+ years (I don't know how old you are), it's hard to change overnight. You'll get used to it; so will I! :)

  • I got married on June 30, and am still getting used to it. It still feels a little awkward signing my new last name because I don't have that smooth signature down yet. Maybe I should practice like I did in 7th grade, practicing the name of my future hubby Smile
  • I would say by month 3 I wasn't even thinking about it being different anymore.

I love it, too! We just brought a house and I had to sign my new name on ALL of the paperwork. I slipped up a couple times with my other initial. haha It def takes some practice, I signed that name for 26 years.

I have friends that still call me "maiden name" then they apologize and I tell them it's no biggie and I'll still always be my maiden name to them. My mom still does it, too. haha

  • I was use to writing it and using it pretty quickly but seeing things come to the house addressed to Mr. & Mrs. DH (or being called Mrs. in general) is what weirds me out sometimes and we've been married almost 4 years now.
Whether or not you find your own way, you're bound to find some way. If you happen to find my way, please return it, as it was lost years ago. I imagine by now it's quite rusty.”

  • One day. Really.   But it took me longer to say "my husband".  (I kept calling him my boyfriend Smile)
  • I got used to saying it after a few months.  But 7 years later I still sometimes go to sign my maiden name...

  • We have been married for over a year and I haven't changed my name yet.  =)    Maybe I'll get it changed once we have kids?
  • I only remember accidentally signing my maiden name once or twice after the fact. My new signature looked ridiculous for a while, though, because I had to actually think about the letters I was writing. Haha.

  • My new last name and maiden name start with the same letter...at first I thought this would be a good thing because my initials don't change...but now I think it's kind of a curse, because once I start that M....its hard to train my brain to finish writing the new name instead of the old one...A lady at the bank made me show ID because my signatures were different on 2 different peices of paper on the same day.

When I get called by my new last name I still don't respond at all...My old last name was very unique so people used it often because they found it interesting, my new one is common so I just assume people are talking to someone else.

  • Saying my new name didn't take me but a few days to get used to. Hearing other people say it took longer.

It has been almost a year and I still pause sometimes when I sign my name someplace. I have to still put in that conscience effort to write the correct last name for me. I love having me new name thogub

  • I didn't change my name so, um, no problems :-)

I go by his name socially when I feel like it and I'll respond to it.  But legally?  Yikes - changing it was never an option.  The idea deeply upset me.

  • I was that girl signing his last name with my name at like 9mos in. Haha. So I was totally supped to have his name as mine. Plus I always wanted to change my last name (family issues with bio-dad).

Though - I do not like being called Mrs. Brian ______. That doesn't fly for me. I'm my own person. You don't see my husband being called Mr. Beth ______.

I've been married 2 years and I have to do a double take every once in a while to see what I signed!

  • We have been married so far for a week and a half so I am definitely still getting used to it!  I slip up all the time.. I mean after over 25 years of writing my maiden name...!  I am really excited though when I do see it in print or have to sign my signature.  I look at it and I am like.. wow, we are really married and now I have his last name... cool!  LOL  I think it will take me some more getting used to for sure.
  • I agree with the other ladies. It takes a little getting used to, but don't worry after a while it'll be second nature to you. I'm still adjusting to his name too and i've been married for 6 months today. :) Seems like everyone one else around is used to the new last name - that helps too. I guess it's easier when your new name is "Jones." There's always a joke about it.

All in all, I wouldn't stress too much about it. You'll get there!

  • After my hubby and I got engaged I would write it all over everything! lol So I was already use to it before we got married. I love using my new name! It makes me feel so happy when I look down and see his last name :)

    Anniversary
  • It took a few months for me to get used to it, it was just strange seeing HIS last name next to my first name. Even though it took me a bit to get used to it, I only signed with my maiden name a few times from what I can remember.
