Plan B in Schools

Re: Plan B in Schools

  • imageLuckyDad:
Plan B is a drug with side effects and should really only be given by a Doctor, Nurse practitioner, or Pharmacist. I'm glad it exists, but it really should be a last line of defense, not something a woman takes every few months after an indiscretion.

Tylenol, Robitussin and Claritin are also drugs with side effects.

I just don't see what the big deal is about Plan B being available over the counter.

The version of the 'tussin that is available over the counter is less effective and has less side effects than a shot of vodka. In recommended doses tylenol basically has no side effects. Claritin... I personally don't like the side effects. I wouldn't want a school nurse giving my child claritin either.

  • I think if my kid is in that kind of trouble and doesn't think he/she can talk to me about it, I'd be glad if he/she was comfortable enough to ask a school nurse for help.

    I have a boy but I think I'd feel the same if/when I have a girl.

  • I am all in favor of any kind of BC distribution that reduces the number of teen pregnancies.

  • I am absolutely in favor of this. Just like I am NOT in favor of mandatory parental notification/approval for abortions.

This type of thing is NOT for teens who feel comfortable talking with their parents about sex. It's for teens who are raped often by close family friends or family members. It's for teens who might face a severe beating if their parents knew they were pregnant or having sex.

I very might think greater distribution of birth control helps protect vulnerable teens.

  • Im not a parent, but I volunteer with 'at risk' teenagers. I think highschool kids...middleschool kids for petes sake are having sex...they are not asking thier parents and most parents seem to be living in denial. I would much rather there be condoms available, and education about safer sex and regular sdt/hiv testing offered for free in highschools, then plan B. But having said that, I would rather it be there with appropriate counselling then out of reach for teens because they are too scared to tell thier mom or thier doctor that they are having sex.

I do think there would need to be a way to control it though, such as students (or parents) having to give the school a list of medication they are already on, and parental signatures in september or the first year of highschool so that any sideeffects/potential conflicts with medication are ok'd by a doctor/nurse before given.

Also for everyone who is so concerned about side effects....kids have been having bad sideeffects to vaccines given in schools for years, the reason we still let kids get them is because the alturnative is a lot worse...and personal I think for a lot of the parents who think thier little angel is not having sex...a baby would be a lot worse side effect both emotionally and finantially for both the teenager and thier parent then some of bloating, cramps, headaches, that are common with plan B.
