How to Dispose of or Recycle Your Old Mattress

I was recently renovating my old house and was wondering what to do with my old bed mattress protectors. Someone suggested me to get them disposed or recycle to reuse but I do not have any idea of how to do that so please help me with your ideas.

Re: How to Dispose of or Recycle Your Old Mattress

  • You can try to take them to a recycling center to see if they accept whatever type of plastic it is. You can take them to a dump...our town has a local spring clean up drop off at certain times of the year. Will they fit in the trash?
  • I would take them to the dump....because of the nature of mattresses/protectors, I would think most recycling places wouldn't want to expose thier staff to any sanitary concerns. ( I know they are plastic and hopefully don't have any bodily fluids or bacteria left on them...but no one wants to put paid staff at risk for desease etc)
  • If it's in good condition then I'd try posting it on kijiji or craigslist for free and see if someone is willing to come and get it.  I hate seeing things go to waste when I know there are people out there that are less fortunate.

If that didn't work I'd take it to the dump or call a junk disposal service.

This is what I was thinking.  You could even put it on the curb and then post on craigslist - first come first serve for the free mattress.  It'll be gone in one hour or less!  We did this with a set of old couches and some people came along with a pickup in under 30 min and snatched them up!

  • Thank you all for your replies. I finally got rid of my mattress and its protector by donating it to a child care foundation. I think that was the best thing I could do with that thing.
