How do you handle out of town interview, w/o telling boss

Ok, so how do you handle an out of town interview that would mean missing work, without telling your boss why you're leaving?  My husband got a call about a job, out of town, that he's very interested in pursuing.  But, in order to interview, he would have to be gone from work at least 2 days.  He doesn't want his boss to know about the other job....he's not necessarily looking for another job but this opportunity came to him and he wants to at least check it out.  So, how would you get the time off, without having to lie and say you're sick?

Re: How do you handle out of town interview, w/o telling boss

  • If your husband go out of town without informing his boss then his boss will contact him many times as he can, so he have to inform him but as you are saying that he doesn't want his boss to know about the other job, so there is only one solution he must lie by giving any other reason like small family trip or something like that.

  • I didn't mean he wouldn't tell his boss he was leaving town, I just meant that he didn't want to tell his boss WHY he was leaving town.  He'd have to find someone to cover his shift if he's not there (they're a 24/7 365day operation).

  • I would just put in for a few days of vacation. Say there are some things you want to get done around the house and you might take a quick day trip somewhere.

This. Depending on previous history, if the boss contacts him on family vacations or he continues to work while on vacations, I might hint that it's a family emergency.  Most people will only ask "is everything ok?" and leave it at that.  They will also be respectful of the time spent with the family.
