How do insurance appraisals work?
Our insurance company asked us to get a few of my jewelry items re-appraised, including my post-wedding ring. DH's friend is a jeweler, so when we bought my ring, we paid his cost plus 2%. We get our appraisal back today and it appraised for $1,200 more than we paid for it. Diamond values have increased and so has gold since I got my ring 2 years ago. I am incredibly confused. To make matters worse, I got on bluenile and a similar diamond (size, cut, color, clarity) is selling for $6k more than we paid for mine.
So, how do appraisals work?
