Are you and your husband on the same car insurance?

So I called my car insurance company today to change my name on my policy.  After that she asked me if my husband also had insurance through them and I told her no.  She said if we combined it, it would be a lot cheaper.  Just wondering if anyone else does this.  Thanks!

Re: Are you and your husband on the same car insurance?

  • We were on the same insurance well before getting married. When I changed my name it did go down because we were married. That was nice.

Find out how much it would be if you both were on your insurance, how much on his, and how much total if you stayed with separate providers. Also which insurance company gives the best coverage?

  • nope, because H has a lot longer good driving history then I do..therefore it would make his more expensive and mine would stay the same (reletively new driver), so it doesn't make sence for us (I can't even drive his car unless he changes his insurance)
  • We're on the same insurance.. but for us it was not a huge price difference of what it was before.. maybe $20/40 a year or something.
  • We were on the same insurance before we were married. When I called to change my name, it when down 107 dollars over 6 months.
  • I shopped ours around and found if I bundled my Homeowners, and both our cars (my car is 11 years old) we ended up saving money.  I paid $80.00 a month and now combined I pay $120.  It's a great deal considering what she used to pay.
  • We are on the same coverage. Between us being on together and having our homeowner's insurance policy on the same plan, we save soooooooooo much money.

(My husband has a crappy record but I'm clean so it's cheaper because of me)

  • We are, and we save quite a bit of money because of it. He was paying about twice as much per month on his own versus what we now pay together.

  • Thanks for the replies. I talked to him about it and we are going to call on Friday to get a quote.  We will do the same with his insurance and then compare.  I hope it is a lot cheaper!
  • Good thing you've already seek for a quote. Majority here saved a lot of $ for their combined insurance so hopefully yours will be too. Goodluck!
  • We have our Auto/Homeowners/Umbrella combined in a package policy.

I've been married way too long to remember if our car insurance went down or by how much.

  • Ours went up, but only because I had previously been on my parents. Since neither of us have had accidents it was a lot lower then most though.

  • H was still under his parents' insurance, so when we got married, he switched to mine, and he's paying less than he was before. Mine is still way less than his, though, as I've been driving for much longer.
  • We just switched our insurance to be with the same company and policy. Honestly I didn't notice that big of a savings, but it is nice to pay one bill instead of two.

  • Car insurance rates change along with life changes- getting married, getting divorced, retiring, adding kids to your policy etc, all influence your insurance rates. Many insurance providers also offer discounts to their customers. For example, my husband and I got a discount for combining our car and homeowners insurance. So I think if your insurance provider says they?d offer you a cheaper rate for combining your policies, I think it?s worth looking into.

  • We are also on the same insurance and have been since before we were even married. When we got married it went down a bit, which is of course nice, no matter how "little" the savings.

  • I wish my insurance would go down if combined, but we looked into it and with my husbands awful driving record combined with the fact that he's delivery driving right now, my insurance would skyrocket if we added him onto my policy.

Maybe in 2-3 years when most of his tickets drop off and he's no longer delivery driving it'll save us money, for now we're stuck on separate policies.
