I guess the new lunch menus are not going over to well with the kids and leaving them hungry. They even made a youtube video about it at one school. IDK what to think about it. As far as calories go, it seems like enough but for them to feel so hungry so soon it makes me wonder if there is enough protein as fruits/veggies digest pretty quickly. A lot more kids are bringing their lunch to school.

Ad to the fact that school breakfast/lunch can be the only hot meals some kids eat, it damn well needs to have nutritional value.
Case in point- Honey Boo Boo and Pumpkin need to obtain nutrional foods somewhere. Momma Bear's sketti has absolutely none.
The problem with the limited calorie intake is that it looks like the school is still serving crappy food but in smaller sizes. They need to revamp their food choices to maximize the nutrition, fiber and protein and maintain the 850 calorie limit. Nuggets and mashed potatoes won't do it.
Amen!
Also, I don't understand why they don't have a snack as well. Kids don't do well with 3 meals and nothing in between. They need additional food to get them through.
I watched it one time and was so disgusted by the show. I have no idea who pumpkin is. The sad thing is nutrition should start in the home and the schools should not have to be blamed for it, but i agree they need to get their nutrition from somewhere.
You can teach proper nutrition at home, but if all the school serves is crap, then it doesn't really matter. Unless you pack a lunch, but in my experience, most teenagers wouldn't do that. I agree that they either need to get the calorie count higher through more nutritional foods, or offer the kids a healthy snack later.
Honey Boo Boo is a trainwreck of a show on TLC.
Here's my hunch: Kids aren't eating everything on their tray. A perfectly healthy 750 calorie meal becomes a pretty paltry 600 calories if you don't like one of the items on the tray and throw it away.
Also, as someone who tends to overeat slightly, I totally understand "feeling" hungry after eating a reasonable amount of food. If you're used to eating 900 calories per meal, you're gonna feel a bit hungry after 700-750.
As a teenager I was skinny and needed way more than their calorie recommendations per day. I can only assume student athletes are pretty much forced to bring their own lunches.
I think it depends what makes up those calories. I usually eat around 600 for lunch but that includes a turkey sandwich with cheese and light mayo, some pretzels or carrots, non fat yogurt, and sometimes a protein bar. I'm good until 5pm. In my experience it's best to fill up on lunch or any meal for that matter otherwise you are eating all day long and it may not be healthy snacks.
regarding honey boo boo:
Yep. They're allowed unlimited portions of fruits and vegetables, so if they choose not to eat them, well, they really can't complain about how they are sooooo hungry.
And seriously, 850 calories is plenty for lunch. No wonder our kids are so fat if they're "starving" after 850 calories.

For example, a switch from tater tots to wildly unpopular sweet potato fries to comply with vegetable serving and color standards has reached a point of infamy within the school and district.
"There are kids that get them but don't eat them," Sukhan said. "They just throw them away. I'm eating lunch from home now."
Boo freaking hoo. If you're soooo weak and malnourished, then you should be grateful to get some sweet potato fries. And waaaah waaaah I don't get tater tots! Give me a goddamn break. Spoiled, entitled, fat kids and the parents who enable them...
It's very common for me to hear my students say that they hate Michelle Obama because she took away their cookies.
I'm pretty much like, "deal with it." My teens will eat just chips and a cookie and wash it down with a mountain dew if we let them. I'd rather them have food with nutritional value, especially my free and reduced lunch kids. I didn't read the article, but I agree that the kids are just not eating the food that's offered.
But...I totally understand veggies and fruits being less appealing in the cafeteria, though. Can't we make green beans that aren't grey? I don't blame them for not eating those. lol.
my read shelf:
I dunno, do some of these kids play sports? Maybe they need to bring some snacks from home, as well.
I packed lunch through HS. I was so cool.
