Tell me about shellac nails/polish

Is it really that much harder?  Chip/crack free?  That much better for your nails?  And does anyone do their own?

Re: Tell me about shellac nails/polish

  • It's horrible for your nails.  I did it quite a few times 2 summers ago(at a salon) and my nails are still destroyed from it - cracking, splitting, etc.  It's fine for special occasions, but I wouldn't make it a habit. Several girls on here have had the same issues, I didn't notice how destroyed my nails were until I had stopped getting them done.

  • I have been using shellac regularly for about 6 months now and I love it! I will never go back to regular polish bc it chips the next day or to acryllics bc that is very damaging to the nails. I have not experienced any cracking or splitting in my nails, when they soak them off they are still healthy underneath. I am getting mine done in a nail salon and mine usually last 2-3 before I see a single chip. I have recently bought a kit to do it at home just for money saving purposes... I'll let you know how it goes!

The same thing happened to me BUT now they formulas have completely changed. The ones that came out a few years ago were terrible for your nails and really ripped them up. However, now the new ones (the new OPI one, Gellish, and others I can't remember) are AH-mazing. They stay on great. My french manicure looked perfect for 2 weeks. And taking them off myself was super easy. You can You Tube it...took like 10 minutes. Go for it!

Ugh...I am always hearing different things about this!  I thought it was gel nails that destroyed the natural nail...so, I had the gel soaked off and went with shellac polish.  It's chipping after 3 days. :(  And, they sold me on the fact that it's so much "better" for your natural nails. Grrr.

THis is good to know, however, I'm leery to try it again after what it did to my nails originally.  I am curious though so I might try it again.

  • this happened to me too :( Got them done 2 or 3 times this summer and they really started to split a lot. They still havent recovered.
  • I've been using Shellac for almost a year now and i adore them! When? you get them done right they stick perfectly, constant shine and beautiful color wear, and it holds my nails together and keeps them from breaking!

  • Gellish destroyed my nails took about 6 months to recover. Only used once!

I also tried OPI this summer, IF applied properly it lasts weeks.  The downside it after repeated use it also started to pit and damage my nails.

I only use now if we are traveling.

  • I did Gelish for our honeymoon and it lasted 3 weeks in the ocean, hiking, etc.  However, it was taking it off in the soak that destroyed my nails.  They became very flexible and weak plus were shredded.  It took awhile to get them healthy again.

  • I have used them on and off for months.  Nails seem ok when soaked off, and if put back on immediately it is great.  Color does last for weeks - shiny, no chips!  Once you take it off and leave it off, nails are weak, split, and peel.  They are very damaged.  I went with this because it was suppossed to be better for nails - but it isn't.  Beginning to wonder why not just go with acrylic - it lasts just as long and is cheaper!
  • I get this done every two weeks. Its TERRIBLE for your nails though.

It doesn't crack or chip which is why I invest in it, and it last for two whole weeks. I love it.
